No. The hybrid battery and motor must be in working condition. They are all part of the system. Some batteries are nickel metal hydride and some are lithium ion.
Depending on the way you drive or the drive mode you pre-select (Eco or Sport), the computer in the car will decide whether to run in electric motor only, engine only or motor + engine combined. This is Atkinson cycle hybrid.
The Honda IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) is different. The motor is there only to assist the engine when decided by the car's computer to do so. This type of hybrid cannot run on motor alone.
