USJ 11/2 Residents respond to call to reduce crime rate

Residents of USJ 11/2 take action to combat crime.
Posted on 02.08pm Oct 13, 2009

Making a point: Tung (second from left ) talking to some of the residents of USJ. SUBANG JAYA. Residents of USJ 11/2, Subang Jaya who are victims of crime in their area are responding to calls by the authorities to do their part to solve the problem themselves.

Snatch thefts, house break-ins and robberies in front of their homes in this area have risen recently and many have suffered losses. “In one survey by some residents, about 50 out of 78 homes were victims of burglaries. We feel that the only way to deter and reduce crime in our area this is to work together and manage our security with the assistance of the local authorities and the Police.” said USJ 11/2 Protem Committee Chairman Mr Tung.

One resident Mr Oliver, who was a victim of burglaries twice, said feedback from residents indicate that robberies could happen at any time of the day. Another resident Mr Chong, had an unfortunate experience of being accosted in front of his house when returning from work at night.
As a result, the residents have formed a gated-community with overwhelming support from the area. Tung said 85% had agreed after sending out letters to more than 230 houses in the Jalan 11/2 area.

“We hope all the residents will sign up for the service so that we can beef up the security with more guards and CCTV” said Tung.

ADUN for Subang Jaya Hannah Yeoh, together with MPSJ councilor Mr Rajiv Rishyakaran and SJ Alert President Mr Robert Chan were present at the Hari Raya Gathering with the residents of USJ 11/2 area. Hannah Yeoh said several residential areas in Subang Jaya which had private security services had recorded a decrease in crime. She said, “Women can move around in some of these areas without fearing of snatch thieves and children can play safely in the streets again”. Hannah also advised residents forming gated communities and having security services that they are subject to compliance of the guidelines to be issued by the local authorities.

Crime victims should also make police reports so that the police will know the type and number of crimes that the residents are facing each day.

Press Release prepared by Mr Michael Goh & Filed by Chang.
