Something to ponder on....

yesterday went to ambank taipan around 9.45pm to do banking .Suddenly overheard an african man (early 30s maybe) talking in a loud tone. When i looked i noticed he was scolding a chinese girl. late 20s, early 30s , kinda big in size. The man was yelling at her, and she was so scared she look down at the floor. Later he ask her something like this ''what were you doing outside there!!!! tell me what !!! ha is this how you show respect to me!!!'' It was really loud then after a while she begged him ..''Please dont do this...thiis the public area''. Afterthat he only realized that there were people in the bank as well and spoke in a angry but softer tone. I walk away as i finished the transaction and wonder what did the chinese girl did to received this type of treatment. I also wonder wouldn't it be better just to stick on same true friends....Just something to ponder on.

Wonder what is meant by this? It's wrong for her to have "befriended" him since he's an African?

I said before, perception does not happen overnight. It came from repeated experience/incident.

The overall image of African in this country has formed a negative perception that………

Don’t argue with me, I said overall not all…and of course there are plenty of exceptions of good African studying/residing/travelling here.

I total agree with you...i wasnt even talking about race or befriending a african. I just wanted to ask for opinion whether is this call a domestic violence or harrassment. Even if she was willing what will the law do to protect the women in this case. Then suddenly out of nowhere this Jey and fellow Tupai go and bash me from the back. Capital L you want to fight pick someone your same size.

Although I think it is a bit inappropriate, Im sure you meant nothing of mentioning the race of the two people involved.

Just as you may have meant nothing of mentioning the sex/gender of the two people involved.

But in Malaysia, some people use race to discriminate by forming various (and sometimes stereotypical) perceptions of different races. And many people use gender the same way, having different expectations of men and women.

Ive always found that it makes me feel uncomfortable but it passes for appropriate among many people here.

Those who read your posting would form their own perception of what bias you might or might not have but they should remember that they have their own biases

In a strictly gender-neutral, non-racial way, I would say that of course people should not yell or get angry in a public place, whether it is a bank or forum or restaurant.

And it is probably appropriate to remind ourselves that speaking loudly, pointing, making agressive gestures and pounding fists is not considered appropriate behaviour in Malaysia.

As for your comment on 'same true friends' how can you determine the status of their friendship? Sometimes people get angry and forget themselves but that does not mean that they are not true friends. It just means that they have anger management issues (or other deeper issues).

Cheers, m

To be fair to Blue Jasmine, I dont think she meant to be racist about the men who scolded his women companion (need not be affectionately connected)...but just as a women, I think it's truly ugly and unpleasant to witness our own kind to be humiliated in a public place like this !

by 'our own kind' you mean 'a woman' or 'a chinese' or a 'chinese woman'?

If it were a man (of whatever race) being yelled at would it be as ugly to most of us?

Cheers, m
