Thanks, pcyeoh for the prompt help.

Dear Sallini, if your son is diagnosed as having ADHD combined with minor autism, then you should try to join the ADHD support group as they have many active members there who have lots of info to share. Once you get into the yahoo groups for ADHD, there is a contact list listing down all the contact nos. for the relevant professionals as well as other useful info.

The ADHD on-line support group (using Yahoo Groups) is known as ‘My ADHD Support’. Go to the following links to join this group (have to register first). Provide your Yahoo email address so that you will be on the mailing list of the support group and emails will be sent to you automatically whenever someone in the group posts any articles or emails.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/myadhdsupport/

The leader of the above support group is Ms. ELAINE LIDDELL. Her email address is: ealiddell@yahoo.com There are lots of helpful and active ladies in this group and I also understand that they do meet up once a month to chat and get to know. You can join them and ask if there is any special school for ADHD children.

Yes, the Sekolah Kebangsaan TTDI 2 is the school in Tmn Tun that is the pilot school chosen by the ministry to conduct special dyslexic classes. However, this school is geared to help dyslexic kids specifically and not so much for ADHD or autism. Dyslexia is a learning disability where one is faced with much difficulties reading and writing whereas ADHD is something to do with attention deficits or hyperactivity. I'm not very well versed with ADHD though.

I also happened to know that there is a Mothers' Support Group by FGA and they provide good support services for parents of kids with special needs such as autism, ADHD, Downs syndrome, etc. Read the email extract below:

> We also extend an invitation to all mothers of
> children with special needs to our monthly Mothers'
> Support Group meeting for a time of sharing,
> encouragement and fellowship.

Wishing you all the best.

Greetings,

I feel greatly encouraged by this active thread. I hope to help in any way I can. I would like to "report" on the USJ 6 Dyslexia classes.

I have a dyslexic son (Std 4 this year) who went to and is still attending the classes at USJ 6. His English improved by some 50% after the 3-months remedial class; from his usual 10-20% to 51% for his finals last year. The remedial class finished 1 week b4 his finals. The rest of his subjects remained the same i.e. below 20.

I am now pursuing the PIBG/PTA of his school (SK Seri Indah, OUG, KL) to have Puan Sariah or a rep from the WP Dyslexia Assoc. to update & brief the teachers on Dyslexia n how to identify possible dyslexics among their students. BTW, this school is unique among local schools in the sense that it has only one session, morning and has an average of 20 kids per class. My guess is this is due to the fact the school is "hidden" deep inside OUG. It is now visible from the KESAS-Awan Besar interchange.

I suspect I maybe slightly dyslexic myself but I haven't gone for any evaluation. It's the ego-thingy, you know. 8-)

Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin & all,

Greetings and Happy New Year 2007!

Thanks Kevin, for your very encouraging report! It is really good to hear that the classes conducted in USJ 6 is doing a lot of good for your son. I'm really encouraged to hear that the dyslexia classes in USJ 6 is very effective in helping kids with this condition. Hopefully your son will continue to improve more (including other subjects) over time and that more other kids from this centre will also benefit in the same way. Hope you can also help to update us on how many classes are now being run and how many teachers are teaching in the USJ 6 centre now as some of us may not be aware if we don't have any kids going there.

Thanks for being a pro-active parent who tries hard to bring more awareness of dyslexia to your son's school. It is great that you have discovered a hidden gem in SK Seri Indah, OUG - for being a school with such a low class attendance and some more it is a single-session school. This school looks like it is very ideal for students with dyslexia as the pupil will gain more personal attention from the teachers there.

Really look forward to hearing more from you in this forum in the near future. Don't worry about being a dyslexic or not. Most of us adults don't really know too as there is no way to find out when we were young then. Anyway, was told that Lee Kuan Yew had himself evaluated for dyslexia in his old age..don't know how true this is lar

Lim

Re: Dyslexia Corrections

Has anyone out there heard of the Ronald Davis program? I found this book titled "The Gift of Dyslexia" and "The Gift of Learning". Ronald Davis (the author) apparently is a dyslexic and founded a Center for correcting dyslexia in San Francisco with some doctors & 'experts'. Sounds too good to be true; a Dyslexia Corrections Center founded & co-developed by a dyslexic...

I have made contact with a Davis-licensed Provider, Ms. Hillary Craig in Sri Hartamas. Has anyone been a client of hers? I'm reconsidering as I'm still having trouble getting my eldest, Jonathan, to write legibly; do his maths correctly, read with understanding...in other words, improve all round rather than just English alone.

Reason for me asking is if what I've read in the book holds water, then quite possibly the Dyslexia Association's current methods may need to include the Davis programs.

BTW, the davis' website is www.dyslexia.com.

regards - kevin

Davis Programme

Hi Kevin,

I am new here but been following this thread. My daughter has just started her classes at the Persatuan Dyslexia in Titiwangsa. She is 5 1/2 years old. With regards to the Davis Programme, yes I have read the book and it does look very interesting, but I have not decided on doing the programme yet as I want to give the Dyslexia Assoc. a chance and I fear that the Davis Programme's cost may be prohibitive for me. Did you check with Ms. Craig how much is the cost and how long will the programme be? Would like to know, just in case I will still need to send my daughter there.

The Davis programme is a franchise, I believe those who goes for training to be a trainer has to pay about USD 15,000.

Thanks
Iza

Dear Iza,

Her fees are RM5250 for 25 hours of intensive work with 4 to 5 hours of followup, she needs to evaluate the child. She can accommodate the child if she/he is in the morning or afternoon sessions.

She politely prefers the non-phonics approach to reading and maths. I think the Davis method can be done at home as the steps are included in his books. Only diff is that the licensed providers such as Ms. Craig would have detailed instructions which may have been intentionally left out of the books.

The Dyslexia Assoc.'s classes were effective in improving Jon's reading but he still needs more work.

personally, I think migrating might be a better option....

regards,
kevin

Hi all,

Have been trying to post here the last few days but can't due to some problems with the website then.

Just to share with you all, there is a locally produced website on dyslexia which is recently been made. It is written by Ms Sheila Devaraj. She is qualified to diagnose dyslexia and she has a passion to help others in this area of learning disability. Her website is at: http://www.apaitudisleksia.com/

I will also like to take this time to update some info on this thread as the thread was started some years ago. Ms Cho Suet Sen is another person who is also very knowledgeable and helpful in this area and in case anyone needs to email her, her email address has been changed to: suetsen@streamyx.com

Regards
Lim

Dyslexia Class in SK SS17 School

We recently heard that the Sekolah Kebangsaan SS17 primary school has now got a specially trained teacher who can teach dyslexic students and the school is running a dyslexia class for pupils who are dyslexic.

This SS17 primary school is located at the other end of SS19 near to the Federal Highway. This school is a quiet school with a low enrolment and so it is very suitable for such a programme to be run.

For those who are keen to send their dyslexic kids to this school, there are some procedures to follow. Try calling the school (tel: 03-56365106) and see the HM there. The name of the teacher who is assigned to teach the dyslexic pupils here is Pn. Saidatul. Heard that part of the procedures to get transferred to this school is to obtain an assessment form from Unit Pendidikan Khas from Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Petaling. The person to contact is En Jajuli - Unit Pendidikan Khas - 03-55186204.

In case you guy can't figure out where about this school is, it is at the F1 loop where traffic from Subang Parade heading to Federal Highway would loop at this far end and then out. Those from USJ traveling along Persiaran Tujuan heading for Shah Alam would turn left and would loop at this far end before turning left and out to the Batu Tiga toll. The school is at the loop.

Thanks, PCYeoh, for the great street map. If you press level 7 on the satellite image, you can even see the rooftop of the SK SS17 school. That's just amazing!
