    Hi
How will our players fare this time..can any of our players reach the semi finals at least? Its being a long time since Malaysia won anything, oh yes except for Squash.David Nicol.

Hope our Malaysian boys do us proud and its abt time we win something big in Badminton at least. At ther sports we are a disgrace at this moment.

I think all was going well until Mr.Taboo came along to buy Thai lunch for the team.
Usually very "sway seow" one, when these jokers come around at the critical moments.
Anyway, Malaysia Boleh to our team.

19/8/2005 Now our hope only rest on 1 single and 1 double, at least give us something to cheer on this weekend:

Lee Chong Wei ... let's go 'ta Bao' home

Surprise win of Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat who manage to overcome Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun, blame it on the wind ..... hopefully no 'headwind' in their following games.

Choong Tan Fook-Chew Choon Eng lost to USA pair what a waste ...

I know its only matter of time....I'm going to get my friends belanja me today
US teams based their selection and training on numbers, similar to basketball. If you have watched it, you could see, how they display the statistic on individual game and team, such number of touches, number of attempts, accuracy, rebounds, etc.

Even selecting team members are based on those number which gives them the merit to succeed, unlike msian, that??? quotalah this??? requirement, etc, the good ones like Karamjit and Vijay S, Nicol, etc are left out, and they have to put in their own effort, how many of them could do it without backup from the gomen.

Again, the soccer team…will be doing some real damage in the upcoming games…just matter of time…they have now started to involve in international games rather than cocooning themselves to American games.

Our jagur lost not because of skill, but determination to win. Just look at The USA doubles men pair, they won because they the patriotic crowd cheered them up and you can see that they are happy to represent USA that's all. They don't have politician to buy them dinner and lunch because they are accepted as americans without reference to race or creed.

With 50% imported talent lah....If our gormen allow this irrespective of their race, we would be jaguh dunia in a lot of other games. Look at our neighbour down south - giving out PR like nobody's business. Relying on our kampung talents, at best, can be jaguh SEA and once in a blue moon, we will have a one off wonder who will come from nowhere and fade as quickly after being drowned by the rewards.

Foreign talent?..there are the foreign coaches there paid to do the job of grooming them. Its all up to the players to do their best and maintain consistency throughout their career. I tend to believe the rewards and handouts after their wins may lead them being spoilt.
Maybe someone needs to standby with a machine gun pointed at them during practices and tournaments!.
A long time ago, someone joked about the Chinese players had a soldiers with bayonet pointed behind their backs them so they'd practice & play well.

Woon still keeps the shuttle flying

IT has been almost five decades since businessman Woon Tong Yeong has been involved in badminton. Despite the lengthy affair, he is still keeping the shuttle flying in the air.

Earlier this month, the keen veteran shuttler won a bronze medal in the B-Grade men’s singles 55-59 years old category in the World Masters Games held in Edmonton, Canada.

Woon showing the bronze medal that he won at the World Masters Games.
The A-Grade category is for former internationals and state representatives, while the B-Grade and C-Grade categories are for competitive and leisure players respectively.

Woon, who was Malaysia’s sole representative in the Games, finished second in his group to grab a quarter-final spot. He reached the semi-finals but failed to go further. For his effort, he earned a bronze medal.

Woon’s feat is still quite remarkable as the Games, organised by the World Masters Games Association, drew a total of 21,000 participants aged from 35 to above 70 years old.

The United States had the largest contingent with 1,974 athletes followed by Australia with 1,442 athletes.

“One thousand players took part in the badminton event. I was surprised by the extent of the popularity of badminton in Canada,” said the 57-year-old Woon.

“I was impressed by the spirit of volunteerism displayed by the 5,000 volunteers who offered their services and helped to make the Games a success.”

Woon Tong Yeong went all the way to Edmonton, Canada, to compete in the World Masters Games. He won a bronze medal there.
Woon’s wife Margaret Lim, 54, accompanied him for the trip. The couple was in Canada for 12 days and took the opportunity to visit Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.

“It was my first trip to Canada. Edmonton offered a different environment from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur city. It was a great way to unwind and release stress,” Woon pointed out.

For the couple, the friendship they made with other veteran athletes at the Games proved more valuable than the RM13,000 that they spent for the trip.

“Besides helping veterans to keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle, such championships provide us with a platform to meet new friends and share our passion for the game.

“Some of the players in Edmonton had taken part in the second Senior World Championships held in Kuala Lumpur last year and the Morning Cup held in Taiwan this April. It was great to see them again.

“The people were very friendly, especially Malaysians who had migrated to Canada. They captured our hearts with their warm hospitality. My wife has even promised to visit them again in two years,” Woon said.

Woon said his wife now planned to take up badminton after watching him compete in the Games.

Woon is also hoping that more Malaysian veteran shuttlers will take part in the 2009 Sydney World Masters Games.

“I am trying to spread the message across. It will be good to have at least one Malaysian side featuring in the team event,” he said.

The team events are decided by five doubles matches.

Three months prior to the World Masters Games in Edmonton, Woon walked for one hour every day at Bukit Kiara Park to supplement his three times a week playing sessions.

Woon said he first picked up the game at the age of 10 when he was growing up at Nova Scotia Estate in Teluk Intan, Perak.

“Back then, badminton was the favourite pastime at the rubber estate. The manager supplied us with shuttlecocks to play the game,” Woon recalled.

Woon’s other achievements include winning the 2003 Chinese Badminton Invitation Championships in Xiamen with doubles partner Bernard Khoo in the 55-59 year-old age-group, finishing runner-up in the 2004 Chinese Badminton Invitation Champion-ships in Tianjin, winning the 2004 Kosan Cup in South Korea and finishing third place in the 2005 Morning Cup in Taiwan.

Woon will be joining a group of 40 players who will be taking part in the 12th Chinese Badminton Invitation Championships to be held in Shanghai from Oct 29 to 31.

Those interested in taking part in this tournament can contact Michael Lee at 012-372 2116.

Did anyone saw the cheerleaders in the Star Sports section today? Wow, no wonder the US pair won! If our jaguh kampungs has those sort of support, maybe in Sepak Takraw, we will be world champions as well, instead of being second to the Thais.
