    Exclamation ADSL Modem

    Hi guys,

Anyone here can advise which ADSL modem is good? Got one friend recommended me Prolink Hurricane 9000G and it costs RM400.00. Is it a good deal? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

got prestige 630 from zyxel, on the streamyx list of certified modems, no problems since 3 years.
don't let them fool you with high speed network modems instead of usb modem. the highspeed is from modem to pc only, what for, if your line is only 10 % of this speed !!

The Aztech wireless router with 4 ports allows you to connect 4 computers using network cables and also a number of notebooks using wifi but of course with limited performance. In my case, I have 2 desktops and 2 notebooks using WIFI and all of them sharing a 512K Streamyx line and I have no issue in performance. This option gives you a lot of flexibilty and cost effectiveness. I can surf from anywhere in my house - kitchen, garden and in the toilet as well.

I would recommend subscribing to the 512K package at RM 66 per month and you buy this router. The router is available at RM 180.00 only. Want a good deal, PM me. I have been using this router for close to a year already and so far no problem.

I've been using a Aztech USB+ethernet modem/router in combination with a 3Com wifi gateway running on 2 wifi notebooks for almost 2 yrs. I couldn't find the Aztech all in one modem/router/wifi combo like pcyeaoh's at the time, so my combo took some fiddling of DNS/DHCP etc to set them up. But no problems related to hardware at all. Only problems faced are line quality causing connection to drop, oh, maybe 5-6 times in all these years-not too bad considering the quality of streamyx service, right?

Security depends if your enable encryption with WEP or not, if u don't, anybody is free to connect via wifi on your router.

pcyeoh, u also surf from the toilet ah?

IMHO, any broadband modem would do.....

TMNet has packaged a free modem...just take that. (Hope the offer is still on)
Like PCYeoh said, save your money meant for a modem to get a good 4-port wireless router...I use Linksys..abt RM300. This would allow 4 PCs\laptops to surf the Net on one streamyx account...more than enough for a home user.

Learn how to configure it securely and you're on your way to broadband bliss...-..!

    Cheers!

Eh...if wireless, not restricted to four lah. PDA and other wireless laptops can access as well. Don't know the maximum though...I use Netgear Wireless Router, there are different standards and make sure you get those that support g ( i think this support wireless speed up to 54 mps). Don't need rocket science to configure it, sup sup suy..

When TM started to allow non homeusers to subscribe to Streamyx, they did not realise that many companies who were using internet with leased line connection paying averagely of RM 30,000 a year (or RM 2,500 a month) began to switch to Streamyx home user packages and pay as low as RM 44.00 per month and laugh all the way to the bank. These companies who do not need a fixed IP enjoyed a substantial savings by doing so. I think TM bled and cannot tahan this "leakages" in revenue that from 1st July this year, they stopped offering Streamyx Homeuser packages to corporate.

I was told that TM is making a last call offering once again only the the home package of RM 99 Home package which come with a free modem. The amnesty period will end on 31st August 2005 after which the Corporate package starts from RM 418 with a Free modem, 1 IP and 3 emails. No more of those RM 44.00 - RM 99.00 home packages to corprate customers. So for those who intend to subscribe Streamyx for their companies, better do so now.

    Wireless router

    Hi,

What are the wireless routers recommended for Streamyx? Are there any features that are required? From this thread Aztech, Netgear and LinkSys are mentioned. I'd like to get one for my parent's house in Subang. I'm currently based in US. Should I buy one from US or MY?

    Regards,

If you just need a basic ADSL modem which you can connect to broadband via network or USB, I would recommend Aztech 600 eu - cost between RM160 to RM180. Works great for me

Don't you know USA is on 110 volt domestic power supply and we run 220 volts? You will fry the US toy when you bring it home unless it is a multi-voltage device like a notebook.
