    Live Crabs

    Hi all,

Where in Subang, Puchong or Kelana can I buy live mud crabs? Been going to many wet markets but no one seems to be selling them.

Thanks for the advise and help.

I have seen them being sold in SS13's pasar malam.
Don't think they are sold in SS15's wet market.

If you know where's Projet petrol kiosk ie if you're coming up from Shah Alam, passing Proton & Seri Hijauan apmt (on the left before the turn-off to USJ/Puchong), there's always either a motorbike or a small lorry selling mud crabs. Do check it out in the evening...sometimes, you'll find 2 stalls at the same time...

    Hi,

Thanks for the info. You are referring to the kesas highway right? Is it open during the day too?

If you can travel a bit further, you can find the live crabs in Bangsar Jalan Telawi pasar malam on Sunday evening. Saw it two weeks ago.

    Hi
Crabs sales are seasonal..something to do with the moon..Anyway I use to buy them from the wet market at PJ Old Town but not anymore , they are so expensive. I prefer the blue sea crabs. At least you are assured they are fleshy.

    Cheers.

These roadside stalls more often than not sell shoi hai ( water crab) Have quite a few experiences with them. It's OK if they are not too expensive and you are not to optimistic. The best ones have be taken by seafood restaurants.
Look out for crab promotions. Recently I went to one at Bangsar... think it's called Bangsar seafood rest. lovely crabs at only 25 bucks/kilo on promotion.Check it out man.

Trying to buy good mud crabs(those with flesh) is a problem as "Water Crabs" have shrunken flesh when cooked.

One criterion I was told is to lift up each crab and feel if it's light or heavy. Light ones are "sooi hai"(Water Crab).

You can still get these mud crabs at the Pasar Malam in the SS 13 (industrial area) every Tues & Sun.

Selecting those with flesh is much trickier. Light ones are filled with water. Am told due to the crabs not having exposed itself to the moon-light( apparently, the crabs need moon-light to bulk itself up).

Waaa....oso got crabs go moonlighting ah...

Apparently they can see better under the moonlight searching for their food. So that means better to buy crabs during full moon ...is it?

Another thing is that most people goes ga ga for female crabs . What the logic behind this preferance? Most guys gives me weired answers....
