May i present you a case at PJ where anti termite was carried out during renovation 8 months ago claimed by the owner. However, the chemical used and dilution rate was not known. Termite has since found its way into the premise and chewing on the laminating floor at Ground floor guest rooms.

With the recent promotion by airasia on traveling..the bedbug infestation at domestic houses are also increasing.This is because bedbug is not only a pest due to hygiene issue but also a traveller pest.

So, apart from doing your laundry of your bed sheet,blanket,comforter on monthly or bimonthly basis. Remember to isolate your luggage at an empty room and put it under hot sun for several hours before storing it. Try to switch direction every hour possible as the sun will not circle around your luggage to give a full penetration of heat to Flush bedbug out from the crevices or gaps. Maybe you will one or two cockroach too.

For immediate prevention, try to spray sheltox inside and outside of the luggage and wrap it inside a plastic bag(preferably transparent) so that you can see whether or not you bring back a friend from a hotel.

In apartment environment, what kind of preventive measures should we take to prevent any termite infestation? Thanks.

Good question Patrick. At the moment, your apartment is very much depends on the management of the building. Most management chooses to us conventional method such as spraying when termite is found. Even when there was no termite such as newly build apartment, the method chosen will most likely be residual spraying at common area (which is targeted ants or cockroach) where most people thought is termite prevention.

To answer your question, you may choose between termite monitoring system or termite prevention system. Termite monitoring system includes placing of inground monitoring stations surrounding a building at an intervals of not more than 10feet apart. This system is effective when baits are inserted into the stations if termites are found eating woods in the station during routine inspection. So, any termites trying to attack the building will be killed or eliminated before making their entry into the building. Having said that, this is not a 100% foolproof system. As the monitoring station is approximately 10feet apart, there are chance that termites may miss the stations. In addition, baiting system doesn't kill all termite species and bear in mind that in Malaysia, we have about 175species of termites. Of course, the one that usually attacking our house are from coptotermes family.

As for the prevention system, I am referring to drilling system that drills holes surrounding a building and injecting of liquid termite solutions to create a protection zone. Holes are drilled at 1.5 to 2.0 feet apart and each hole is injected with approx 5litre solution. The effectiveness of this system varies with the chemical proposed to you and the structure of the building. Different apartment has different design of landscaping this effectiveness of the system varies too. In short, if you could drill hole close to the building and with a complete circle of 1.5 to 2.0 feet apart for each hole, your premise is considered safe.

In conclusion, each system has its pros and cons and depends on your priority. To me, termite must be eliminated if found.

For individual apartment unit, air ventilation and making sure water leaking is fixed immediately will reduce possible termite attack. This is including water leaking at any unit of a same building.

Other than that, some people choose to do residual spraying using repellant chemical all at wall floor edges. For me, I find that it is just a deterrent(preventing termite from coming to surface) which will further damage ur wooden furnitures before it is discovered.

Therefore, it is best to have your house checked every 3 or 6 months and if you do have a continuos contract with poco on termite at yearly renewal of rm600 and below. I strongly encourage you to renew it. The cost of termite treatment (specially baiting system) may have gone down substantially over the past 2 years but it is still more than rm1700 for a yearly treatment.

For rm600, you can have peace of mind for at least 3 years or more and not to mention the cost of repair is reduced even if there was any termite attack as it will be discovered within the checking intervals. Imagine if you do not have checking every 3 or 6 months. What usually happens when you discover termite activities? Your wooden flooring or cabinet is badly damage and cost of repair may be even higher than cost of termite treatment.

More often we received calls from owners regarding termite attack, a form of treatment was carried out due to the fear of termites.

If you have sprayed with insecticides such as sheltox,ridsect. Chances are termites are still there but merely disturbed by your actions and have gone into hiding.
Remedy: mop clean the area you have just sprayed and try to place carton boxes, newspaper back.
Reason: to attract termites back.
Why: spraying or drilling method carried out to existing termite problem at homes do not eliminate termites colony but merely control the population at certain level so as not to damage ur property.
By luring termites back, you are giving yourself another alternate treatment method which is proven effective and efficient in eliminating subterreanean termites.

If you have sprayed with insecticides bought from hardware, more often, you are brought home either chlopyrifos, alphacypermethrin, malathion which are served as a repellent chemical to termites. Of cos, termites in direct contact chemicals sprayed will be dead but the concern is the queen that continues to lay eggs. New termites venturing out from the nest will be deterred by the smell of the chemical sprayed earlier at certain spots. Hence, they will detour and make new routes, which very often will create new damages to your house and is found out only few months later.

So, before calling those pest control experts, you might want to do some remedies by yourself by cleaning the spots, putting back newspaper or carton boxes and monitor for one week to a month before calling them for another opinion.

Current termite treatment methods consists of dusting, spraying, foaming, drilling, and baiting. The most effective method so far is baiting system but on condition that termite is found alive before the bait system is initiated.
