989 images in 81 albums... still growing

I am amazed at the the organic growth of the Photo Gallery.

Soon, fRaNkY will be delighted to see the collection break the first 1,000 mark of archived images.

Moderator Dreamer has been the live-wire in organising photoshoot outings - I have tagged along on two trips so far. Very satisfying because ( 1 ) I get to learn from fellow photobugs and ( 2 ) we enjoy each other's company.

It's one of the best activities to promote Malaysia. All photobugs here cut beyond the cultural divides. Just like Band of Brothers, believe me.

Perhaps one day, and make it soon, we should organise an outing for point-and-shoot (P-n-S) camera owners. You will be amazed to see sometimes P-n-S cameras take better pictures than the dSLR.

Proof, just take a look at these photos I took at the Scorpion concert - with a RM400 3.2 megapixel, no-optical zoom lens Ben-Q camera which my 8-year-old daughter uses!

    Details in this URL:

A friend says it's the eye behind the viewfinder that matters. Not always the camera. (In my case, I think I just happen to snap at the right time

So, anyone care to organise a treasure-hunt-like P-n-S photoshoot around, say... Taman Subang Ria?

Perhaps... I could get TV Smith to conduct a workshop on basic skills on digital photography.

    Is there anyone to lend ( 1 ) a room for 2o people ( 2 ) an LCD projector for half-a-day?

We will focus on tips like
( 1 ) Composition - very basic but very important
    ( 2 ) Aperture - Tapping natural light
( 3 ) Shutter-speed - so that your hand won't shake at the wrong time
( 4 ) Depth of Field - OK, it's about getting blurry images that still look nice
( 5 ) Perspectives - big word for "best angle that tells the best story"

I am sure, we can get USJ-ian YS Loh (a.k.a. "Yeng Seong Loh" - cameraman in Cantonese) to share with us how he managed to capture this on the digital camera:

Perhaps we could have free-print coupons or SD cards as incentives for best photos after our outing...

Give me your response... because I have bigger plans to grow this Digital gallery - one of which is to chronicle developments - good and bad ones - around Subang Jaya, USJ and Putera Heights.

But there's far bigger plans than this!

(Kasi suspense dulu..., so I stop here.)

But come out and start shooting...

Jeff, if you quite firm on the digital photography session, I could try to talk to my friend to use his training room in USJ 21. Let me know.

Yes, Patrick, I very much want to make it happen.

With the venue found, we next just need to get an LCD projector on loan. I can work with TV Smith on the "syllabus" and notebook.

I will advise on the firm date, which will be a Saturday afternoon, most probably the first or the third Saturday of the month.

Meanwhile, those interested, please sign in your name - perhaps for a start we will limit it to 20 people, first-come-first-served basis:

I'd love to attend. TV Smith should be fun to listen to. But the main reason is to learn from all the sifu's vast experiences....

Yes, during the TV Smith Workshop, we will also take the opportunity to introduce to you guys the community behind the USJ Gallery.

    They are:

    1. Bok a.k.a. Dreamer (Moderator, USJ 6)
    2. fRaNkY (Moderator, USJ14)
    3. YS Loh (USJ 4)
    4. Nazree (Shah Alam/Damansara)
    5. Majdi a.k.a. red (USJ11)
    6. Tey (USJ6)

These are the people who will bring us for outdoor shooting.

In the workshop, don't forget to include also the 'darkroom' activities as most of the tricks of the trade happens here. Shooting can be pretty easy now (of course you must be creative too) that the camera is doing all the guessing work for you but how we want to present the finished art is a LLL - Long Life Learning. My friend who is a famous long time professional photographer (quite a number of billboard ads are shot by him) admitted that he is still learning.

Let us plan the syllabus in an organised manner.

We need to get the basics right before getting into the "darkroom" techniques.

Frankly, indoor learning must be supplemented with outdoor shooting, the practical (hands-on) part.

That can't be learnt in a 2-hour session. The normal Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced stages still apply. It's sequential for beginners, and modular for those with the basic basics.

What Nazree, Dreamer and YS Loh have are an outcome of at least RM15,000 investment in equipments, and 20,000 hours of field work hours - each.

So, we each have to first get a footing.
