Subject: Urgent: Qin Wei (2 yrs old) needs help!

    Our beloved friends,

Our 2 years old daughter, Qin Wei is suffering from a rare disease called HLH. Like any other kids, Qin Wei was a healthy child before this. She started with high fever and was hospitalized on 1st July 04. The Pediatrician found out she has liver & spleen enlargement and her platelets count was really low. It could be a whole list of diseases and they did all sorts of blood test to find out the cause. After a week, she actually showed improvement but unfortunately it got worsen 2 days later. The Pediatrician got Dr. Lin who is a Paediatric Haematologist in to check on her. Dr. Lin suggested both blood & bone marrow test. From the result, Dr. Lin confirmed that Qin Wei is suffering from HLH. HLH can only be treated with chemotherapy and if it fails, the last resort will be Bone Marrow transplant. Qin Wei went through 5 rounds of chemotherapy. We could see how much she suffered after each course of chemotherapy but we have no choice as that was the only treatment. Her condition deteriorated last Sunday and she is now treated in the ICU.

Dr. Lin has confirmed that her disease carries with it a high risk of mortality and the only way to save her life is with Bone Marrow Transplant as soon as her condition is stable. Every day there is fear, we are reminded the mortality of it at anytime unless Bone Marrow transplant is carried out successfully. The cost of operation is estimated to be MYR 200,000.00 excluding post procedures treatment (pls see attached letter from Dr. Lin).

We are reaching out to each and every one of you in giving any form of financial support to realize this operation. Whether it is big or small amount, each donation will definitely help to save the life of a child.

For those who wish to help, we would appreciate if you could forward your donation by cheque made payable to New Ai Ling o/b Foo Qin Wei

I would think it is important that every one of you be aware of such disease, as many children were not given a chance in fighting the disease due to delay in diagnosis. For more information of HLH at http://www.histio.org/association/library/hlh-fhl.shtml or file attached.

We will deeply appreciate if every one of you could help to forward this email to your friends and appeal for their generosities.
Our sincere appreciation to your support & assistance.

    Best regards,
    Andy Foo & Ai Ling

    =============================================

    A note from me

I received this email forwarded to me by a friend and I was asked to check this out since I am living in Subang Jaya. I called up Subang Jaya Medical Centre (03-56341212) this morning and it is confirmed that Qin Wei has been admiited there for such a problem and according to Dr Lin's advice, she needs a bone marrow transplant. I also called up the parents and got to speak to Mr Andy Foo who took my call as his wife was busy attending to the daughter's need. I was updated by Andy that his daughter is now being transferred out from the ICU ward and is now in a private room. We know how it is as parents of a child like Qin Wei and how heart breaking it is to know that your precious child is slipping away unless something drastic have to be taken. The operation is very costly (RM 200,000 and that does not include post operative care) and definitely beyond the means of parents who do not have any contingency plan like an insurance plan or huge savings. But you and I and many others (if you forward this as an email to them) can make this miracle happen if we can chip in to help this couple in any small way we can. I have known a similar case like this (you can call me for details) where the people in the Internet community who care can make things happen. Spend some time to look at the attachments and let the attachment tell the whole story to you. I shall load the photo later. For those who can contribute, please do so directly to Mr Andy Foo's bank account, the details of which is stated below. Do send them a card and well wishes to greatly encourage them during this difficult time. By the way, I do not know Andy but if anyone who is desperate enough to seek help to save a daughter, I will do my best to help out though I am not rich in wealth but big at heart.

    Thank you

You can help too but don't simply forward this as emails to your circle of friends before you checking this out yourself by making those necessary calls that I did. No one will do anything unless you personally put in some personal words just like what I did.

Thank you for your suggestion but I am afraid that this the wrong platform to collect donation though it may be for a very good cause. Many people would object eventhough I find there is no valid reason to do so. Some people who do not want to contribute will make an issue out of it rather than just politely say "Sorry no, but keep up the good work?" but instead more often than not will kick up a big fuss. The best is still the personal approach.

PC, if I may suggest. You could get Ray Cheng to put up a box at his shop. Those keep could just stop by his place and drop the donation in an envelope with donor's name and amount. We could set a closing date, then tabulate the collection and post here the names of donors and the amount. This will ensure transparency and accountability. Then, you could handover the money personally to Andy.

I dont mind helping you out if you want. Those who want to send direct can still do so.

    Rgds.

Err..Hi - Orchi visited the parents n Qin Wei this evening at SJMC.....she has been transferred from ICU ward to North Wing ward room no. 279... in the preparation n anticipation for the bone marrow transplant.....

Err...by the time Orchi reached the room....there were already few kind folks from KL visiting Qin Wei...she is slowly recruperating from the chemo therapy done to her....

Err...Orchi managed to speak to Andy Foo the father....n as far as Orchi could understand the conditions of this potentially fatal illness from Andy....timing is crucial that Dr. Lin n the hospital staff could find the matching bone marrow from donours elsewhere....

According to Andy...the good doctor thinks....there is a good 80% chance that they would find her the correct match....very soon.

Err....to the concerned public....Andy wishes that Orchi conveys the message to as many people as possible that....he has to apologize for asking everyone trying to investigate about the case...to NOT jam the phone lines at SJMC....or NOT try to contact the good doctors whom are doing their level best to concentrate on the currently urgent agendas....

For the time being..he pleades to those whom are willing blood donours to turnup at SJMC during its office hours...as soon as possible...

At the same time....he pleades for willing monetary donours to contact him directly at the given hand phone numbers listed....should the donour wishes to get further infos or details about the case....

As Andy was trying to explain all that he could to Orchi n the rest of the visitors.....he was constantly in tears....

Apparently...this rare conditions which Qin Wei is suffering from....the good antibody blood cells in her body...has suddenly becoming to be the enemy...attacking vital organs in her body....

As the result of which....she is also loosing her eyesight n hearing as well....

Is anyone coordinating the collection of funds here? Or are we supposed to donate directly?

    Dear Friends

Our sincere thanks to all of you for forwarding our previous mail of
help to all your friends and family members.

There have been numerous calls to the hospital and the doctor-in-charge; this is disrupting the flow of work at the hospital and to other sickly patients. As much as we would like to have visitors for Qin Wei; please note that Qin Wei's immune system is very low and is not allowed visitors. We really appreciate all your help and concern for Qin Wei and we seek your understanding on this matter.

We would appreciate all questions to be channel to our e-mail address:

anew@deloitte.com or please do call us at our mobile no. 0162227955

    Sincerely

    Ai Ling & Andy

Thank you Jeff for covering this post as a front page story. When I came across the email, I immediately called up SJMC to authenticate whether this is genuine. The moment the SJMC authority confirmed the case, I felt that I have to do something drastic than merely forwarding the email to a hundred people who most probably send to another hundred without anyone of them stepping forward to do something. I called Andy, a total stranger to me to provide a word of comfort and assure him that he should not worry about the money but just spend his precious time with the daughter.

With the story as front page news, we will definitely cut down those phone calls to SJMC. People will be more serious about the urgency. Orchi called me to say that people have started to response to Andy's request for financial assistance. So if you all want to help, just send the URL http://www.usj.com.my/usjXpress/deta...jXpress&ID=360 to your close friends for contribution. I am sure this news will move them.

Patrick, this is a good idea and I will discuss this with you further on how to go about it. I met up with Ray Cheng of eGrocer at USJ 16 just a few hours ago and he is very suportive of the idea. There are people who want to contribute but where or to who can they pass their contributions. We must make it easy for them to do so and placing a secured box at eGrocer is a very good suggestion.

    Taken from http://webmanultraflash.com

"At 8.00pm on Thursday, 19th August 2004, I went to SJMC to visit Mr Andy hose daughter,Qin Wei is suffering from a rare disease called HLH. From our conversation, he have highlighted that the operation is scheduled as soon as possible but this requires Qin Wei to be healthy.

When I asked how much the cost will be, he answered," that he's not sure of the exact of the exact figure but he estimates it will cost around RM200K (not including follow-up treatment). Then, I asked him what is the condition of Mdm Ai Ling, the mother of Qin Wei. Mr Andy said, "she's stronger than me" and I felt that he is explaining it in a sober tone.

Lastly, I ask Mr Andy his last comment and he said,"I appeal to all Malaysians donaters - DONOT call SJMC instead contact them through his mobile number." He added "I'm thankful to all Malaysians for their concern, donations and prayers for my daughter."

Lastly, I hope to all Malaysians to give a helping hand to those who need help!

    pcyeoh and all,

I've talked to a friend(good one) in my company abt this case. I told them we should try to help if we can. they have asked me to show them some proof(eg. Doc's testimonial/Hospital comfirmation) to ensure that this is not a hoax or some sort.

I'm not from subang and I do not have the luxury to drive up to Subang to "validate" that it's genuine case.

I can talk to my boss(highest level) but i need some proof that this is genuine. Can you(or anyone else) pls help me get this info that i need to show that it's a genuine case.

    Regards,
    Eric

Thank you Mr Eric for wanting to help in this good cause. I understand fully the concern of anybody to be convinced that this is a genuine case. The only person that will be able to convince him is Andy Foo, the father of the child. I have spoken to him and he will be in touch with you.

I also took the opportunity to share with him what is going on in the SJ/USJ community and asked him if he has visited the usj.com.my. Unfortunately, he has not and when I told him what is being done, he would like to thank everybody for their involvement. He hardly had any time for anything eversince his daughter was stricken down with this rare disease. He fully trust us for what we are doing to help his daughter to undergo the operation. As at yesterday, they have found 4 possible donors and their samples are now being analysed for full compatibilty. This is not a straight forward operation and I wouldn't want to trouble him for details neither do I want to trouble you all. Andy is happy to share with you that his daughter's condition has improved day by day and hopefully she will be strong enough to undergo the operation the moment a donor with a perfect match is confirmed.
