Shocking case of abused Indon maid

    BY PARVEEN GILL
KUALA LUMPUR: A severely bruised and scalded maid, described by officials as the worst abuse case they have seen, has been given shelter at the Indonesian embassy here.

Nirmala Bonet just before she started work in September.
The wife of a managing director has been remanded for nine days to help police investigate the matter.

The plight of 19-year-old Nirmala Bonet came to light after a condominium guard saw her sitting and crying on a staircase, with ugly bruises all over her swollen face and bleeding from the head and mouth on Monday afternoon.

He called police, who were shocked to find that her whole body, including her breasts and back, was severely burnt and scalded.

19-year-old Nirmala Bonet showing the injures sustained over the last five months while working as a maid for a couple in Jalan Tun Razak.
They then took the girl to hospital for treatment and later to the Indonesian embassy where she was given shelter.

Nirmala, from Kupang in Nusa Tenggara Timur, came here in September last year with the hope that her parents, both farmers, would be happy and proud of her when they saw how much money she earned for them.

When I go back, what am I going to tell my parents when they see all the scars? she asked.

Nirmala claimed that for the last five months her employer s wife had abused her daily, burning her with a hot iron, pouring boiling water on her and using other objects to hit her.

She said she had many opportunities to escape but did not know where or whom to seek help from.

Nirmala said the first time she was abused was when she accidentally broke a mug while washing it.

She (employer s wife) then threw boiling water on me.

One day, she got upset while I was ironing. She said the clothes had not been properly ironed and slapped me.

She took the iron out of my hand and pressed it against my breasts, said Nirmala.

She said she would only be given medication if she asked for it and she was expected to wake up at 6am every day despite her injuries and condition.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Hadi Ho Abdullah said Nirmala was treated for her injures at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. ..............

From what I saw on last night's TV3 nightline, it was a Chinese lady being led to the lockup (eat ur heart out, astro!). Some daily said that she's 34 yrs old.

What is frightening is that she may hv abused her 4 kids too, ranging from 8mths to 8 yrs old. I pity the kids, with no one to look after 'em, esp with the impending arrest of the father.

Hi buddy KH EE - Orchi is afraid this might just be a tip of a larger iceberg. Imagine the looks of the faces of their own kids(abused too?), when they might be caught in the tussle, n got 'taken' up by welfare in the process also would then be sent to other 'homes'.....

It really saddens me to think of kids being "tussled" around. What kids need are the type of experience that you all shared at the "Down Memory Lane" posting.

Here's hoping that the kids r ok & not abused or that the father won't be arrested.

Hi buddy KH EE - There are people crying for stiffer sentences already. Even from those on all levels of society n authorities. The aftermath of what is going to happen next, especially with the family's kids would just be as saddening....

Just saw the pics on JO screenblog....n read em public outcries of unimaginable proportions from all sorts of people....

In NST today, ministers spoke of stiffer penalties with pics of smiling faces of themselves, including the X mca boss himself being the co-donator of RM30,000(around 60 million rupiah) to the abused maid as compensation for her medical treatment of her physical injuries sustained from the alleged abuse. What about the emotional trauma caused?

Then again, what about the couple's kids' sufferings?

BTW, Lee Lam Thye said 'No need to go to the extreme'

All four kids are taken care by paternal grandma who came all the way from Sibu. Don't worry about the kids (maybe they are better off without mom) because people who love kids would have passion for others too.

I don't think I am far from being wrong to assume that this finance officer's wife (MM "demote" the hubby???) is the treating the kids well ........

My office collegue said the maid hurt herself (self inflicted) because it is so bad. If the majikan did it, why wont she runs away before it gets worse.

But I think she did not run away because she does not know where to run to. If she did it herself, why didnt her majikan stops her from doing it or sent her back to even take her to see doctor. I bet you, if it is self inflicted the first thing I would do is sent her back to the agent before she do any harm to my own children.

Unlike the Filipinos maid, Indonesian maid does not have the extensive support from their government. You try to do the same things to them, the whole government of Philipines will jump.

Whoever you are, and how high class you are, so shouldnt treat another human being so bad. Even we treat our pet better...

It was sickening to see what has happen to that poor girl. I hope the government will take stiffer action and not just panas-panas tahi ayam.

We are Malaysia and I am proud to be one. But to see how other malaysian can act, I feel ashamed of it. Especially to my foreigner husband who show me the newspaper yesterday......

    Are we that bad.....

These are all physical abuses but there are also other forms of abuses such as long working hours, non-halal food for Muslim maid, working under extreme condition etc. They are also human being, not slaves, treat them as a family member.

This morning I was at Sri Melur when i saw a family of three with their maid. The father and the mother were busy having their meal and reading newspaper, while the maid was busy attending to the small kid. The maid was standing, at all time, next to the kid, no food, no drink, not even sitting down for once. Really reminds me of a slave. sad....

If the Philippines govt jump should the same happened to their maids, it's okay.

But as for the indonesians, though their govt/embassy doesn't give that much support, there are 100s of thousands other indonesians here who may wake up and protest. What if this happen? And we know it well they can be very rowdy. They dare die!

Agree with u, mallanhead. The injuries are not self inflicted. I saw Buletin 1.30 yesterday showing the injuries she has on her body, examined by TV3 reporter. On her back, there was burned mark made by a hot iron, with the pointed front of the iron pointing upwards when it was pressed to her body. That could not have been done by herself.

When asked on why she did not seek help for her abuses, she said she didnt know how and she was scared. I thnk that is the problem. Maids are not trained or informed on how to get help if they are experience something like this.

This kind of ppl should be locked up for life. I am shocked that this kind of barbaric treatment can happen... very sad.

Eventhough she is a maid, she shouldn't be treated like that... she is human just like us.

    Angry Day-off

I would like to suggest that ALL maids, like any employees be given at least a day off every week.

I am certain that if these maids are expected to be in public by themselves, this "shocking cruelty" would be not be left unchecked.

Yes, a stiff sentence should be given in this instance too !

Looking at what has happened in jails in Iraq, Palestine, Bosnia - this behaviour is a raceless and borderless shame.

What Private Lynndie England did in Abu Ghraib pales against the actions of this sick woman. Lock her up for good, I say.

Hi - Just came out of the late night news by TV3. Talk about rubbing more salts onto the poor girl's wounds n emotional trauma, everybody from the relevant ministries, presses, n parties or whatever busy body there are out there, have been dragging her from one press session to another press session, release after release, thoughout the past couple of days, subjecting her to taking her blouse or shirts off n on, put on n off again, for all them photo sessions, for what in heck or heaven for, which would do any bit of good to her in the first place. LEAVE THE POOR GIRL ALONE with the proper authority, Please, Please!

Enough is enough of it, what more can anyone hopes to prove or show off from these publicity events...

Now, with all them 'proposal' n talking' only, some authority has just propose also that in future, all employers of foreign maids would be required to undergo n pass a mandatory psychiatric tests before being given the permission to hire foreign maids

In addition, it has been proposed also that eligible employers have to sign some kind of a separate agreement with the relevant authority rather than with the maids' agencies(currently being practiced) to ensure the eligible employers' responsitbility n well beings that the maids would be employed n treated in better manners as oppose to the existing 'non effective' governing rules n regulations.

    Now the govt is over-reacting.

Previously they were saying that this is an isolated case and doesn't reflect Malaysians. But now, every employer will have to go thru the psychiatric test.

Imagine achee having to stand in a queue having to go thru psycho test when needing a maid. Together in line, achee may see orchi HTH, simon_tan, mallanhead etc-etc., all trying to look straight!!!
