This morn's RTM1 reported that a study by U.PutraM'sia revealed that M'sians read an average of 1.5 pgs of books per year! Shocking, eh?

Wonder if they will do a study of reading other forms - newspapers, mags, internet, etc...?

Yeah, I wondered too if UPM considered those other alternate forms of reading material? Do academic/technical papers count as books? What about webpages? Lots of useful info on the web too that I often print out for reference. Have they conducted the same research before in the pre-Astro years?

From what I heard the research was on printed books only & rtm didn't mention the year that it was done.

I went to the fair yesterday. It was divided into 3 parts : agencies involve in books industry, publisher of not so serious books (novel, comics, mags etc.) and publisher of serious academic books.

Well, based on what I saw at the fair, I think most Malaysian read books that are not that serious since that section is more crowded then the serious academic books section.

If you read comics or any magazine or even websites, doesn't that count as a reading material since it also a printed material?

Read the Sunday Star that, according to the Education Minister, in the 80's M'sian were reading only 2 pages and, nowadays, 2 books a year. But I specifically heard RTM mentioned "satu setengah muka surat setahun". So go figure...

Hmmm, went there today. Best thing I did was to sign up for the National Library.. Big booth at ground floor at entrance facing parking complex and the Pustakawans were very helpful (almost canvassing). I suspect they have undergone sales training... Registration and issuance of membership card was within minutes.

Only RM5 for 3 years and now you can access journals online (but limited collection... and most of the e-whatever seem to be freebies in the first place).
www.mylib.com.my. An RM5 VCD you can only enjoy for 2 hours (or maybe just halfway before you need to return it because it's blurry).

As for the rest of the exhibition, it'll mostly appeal to parents to want to buy educational material (both on paper and CD-ROM or as some gizmo) for their young kids (primary school or below) or to academics who are finding for suitable textbooks -but I'd rather browse through Amazon (they have a insightful 'star' rating and 'look inside' system) and place an order later with UM co-op bookstore or Kinokuniya.
