There are many good places to further studies - in terms of university ranking, research and employability.

But before asking "where should be the ideal spot to further studies", it is good to look at the mirror and ask yourself two reality-check questions first :

    1. Do your kid have what it takes to be there ?
    2. Do you have what it takes to send him/her there ??

    (1) is the easier part, (2) is the challenge and can be the showstopper for majority.

Scholarships ?? Yes, can dream on....

Top univesrities in UK don't have the practice to grant scholarship in undergraduate studies. Postgraduate degree, yes.

Few top universities in US will provide the necessary financial assistance but the success rate to get in there is very slim (less than 3% for international students and for US citizens is around 6%). I am talking about good school like Harvard, Stanford, Caltech and MIT.

Australia and New Zealand ?? I doubt they provide scholarship for undergraduate studies because they run university as a business.

So, Singapore is the best hope if you don't have $$ but your kid is brilliant. If your kid is good in Mandarin and with the top 1% results in UEC/STPM/A level, can try top universities in PRC, scholarships is provided.

Simpletons think they can choose without knowing whether they have what it takes to choose !!

Simpletons like Jack Ma tried to apply for Harvard but rejected 10 times. When he launched Alipay at the time , many people said " this is the stupidest idea you ever got "

Many people do not understand another simpleton who quit college and quoted with phrase " Stay Hungry , Stay Foolish " in the commencement later at Stanford.

In one of two meaningful interpretation Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish -

It means we should not get influenced by what others think or say about your mission. If you are on a mission to mark a dent in the world, you will meet many people in your journey who will try to discourage you and make you feel foolish. I think he meant not to change your course and get influenced by such people. Instead, stay foolish and move on to accomplish your mission.

“Stay hungry”.. was to say stay hungry for answers, why , why not.

“Stay foolish” be a fool to listen to ideas , be open and try them without letting ego come in the way.

Be open in life and always keep looking for what we can make better..

Steve Jobs quoted this because his successful life also lived on the juxtaposition of staying foolish in years of his career. He left the college , people said he is mad. He lived sober life, people called him mad. But he was foolish who knew what he is going to do. He was thrown out from his own company Apple but he made a way out make things good again and again become a part of it because he had determination. In fact, the best thing that happened to him was being fired from Apple. He did what interested him and he excelled in that. So no matter what people call you, either sane or insane always stay hungry, stay foolish.

Most of all, he stays foolishly to ignore specialist oncology surgeon advice that he would died within months, but lives on a decade later leaving behind the legacy of iPhone, iPad , iTunes. -

This is what he meant by “Stay foolish” in “Stay foolish , Stay hungry” quote.

What would happened if he said , "Stay Safe , Stay Smart" graduated with a college degree? iSayman.

Be back after the turkey break somewhere in SJ to USJ, Petaling Jaya and Kelana Jaya.

As a quick prelude, after my observation from driving students from public University like TARC to MU, and private colleges like Taylors to Segi and Lim KoK Wing, I have the listing of ideal college for those who are qualified with academic excellence and clear vision what to do with the degree they gonna to be graduated with. Stay tuned .......Stay hungry for my story to be unfold.

It is interesting to see how people spin and twist…

Why bother to start a thread asking “ideal college and country of education, which and where should be the ideal spot to further education?" when his life motto is " rejected by college is ok, just stay foolish, stay stupid “ ....

It is even more interesting when people who is already in his 60s but still complain about trivial living cost, he wanna benchmark/compares himself with the success story of jack ma, steve jobs, etc….

Well, maybe this quote from a forumer (coincidently was used to describe such people) can sum up...

    Here it goes…

Before you do the flip flop, I aint doing any spin but just to answer to your statement which stated "Simpletons think they can choose without knowing whether they have what it takes to choose !!"

I am not bench marking myself against Jack Ma or Jack Chan but referring him as simpleton in your above description. He was that clueless to apply Harvard and failed 10 times. Just cooking accordingly to the recipe given.

Moreover, I aint in my 60's where I am still not qualified to make full withdrawal from EPF. Masih tunggu durian jatuh. Aint complaint about trivial living cost myself but sharing many average rakyat complaints and experiences who find it hard to cari makan. Probably those who goes Sapporo island and drink Sapporo find it hard to relate to it.

Dont see it like 1 eye fella...... where in the kingdom of blind he is the King Kong of them with 1 eye open shut. He can Kong whatever he likes.

I hope you can hold your horses 1st as I will be back after my turkey break. Stay hungry but be Sabah. Dont be the judge but be part of the jury before you start firing and goes offensive in my thread without me being able to present my college case . Meanwhile, I still got to wash up the kitchen which is in the mess after delivering Ayam Belanda to PJ and USJ and still have some turkeys prep for tomorrow Christmas day for a church function. Probably I might have time to cook the story in Boxing Day.

BTW, it is not for my kiddies but to share the experiences and observations from some of the parents during dinner talk and Uber rides. Even then, I feel this is a platform is the right choice to get more comprehensive answers. Meanwhile I stay hungry, stay foolish where I find Steve Job Phrase to be motivational.

If i still look stupid to you.....let me extend my apology to you since it is Xmas eve. I rather be stupid than to be a smart alec.

This are the stories collection where it begins with future education dilemma for Malaysian parents where to send their children to college or university.

Many kids especially the non bumi with excellent result in public examination are either given the scholarship on the courses that are not in the favor , interest and based on what they are capable or doing. Such as being offered scholarship for forestry instead of medicine or accountancy.

And many parents wasted thier life saving to send thier kiddies to private colleges where they graduated to end up unemployed. And some find it hard to cope up with the fees due to economic and currency fluctuation especially those sent over the seas.

Unless one is wealthy here and can throw bundles without a wink, this thread is meaningless.

Still to be graduated with a degree is meaningless if the learned kid do not learn to possess positive attitude, humility, and vision to be this a better world for himself and others.

I agree with some parents that if the kiddies wanted to to college or university of thier choice, the option are for them to start it right. Earn it via scholarship with excellent public result, prepare to work for it and most of all, if necessary pay back the loans from the parents or institutions that grants it.

Two of my nephews graduated with medical degree with top honors. They started working since age 15 at Subway in NZ which enable them to have own pocket money to travel round the world before they start thier medical careers.

One kid graduated to the top of one Taiwan university and he devoted his time to help other problematic kiddies with his model excellent result. His parents had to send him to Taiwan as he was bouncing from 1 school to another due to erratic hyperactive behavior. The grateful parents donated all full house Majestic hotel dinner angpows to set up a similar university here.

These are the stories where either the kiddies or parents starts to carve thier path way before university education.

Many parents felt that the previous designation of college choices from UK to USA or Downunder may not be the best choice to further thier education. These are the views of parents who can well afford since they are self made success stories of biz people graduated university of hard knocks and professionals armed with various degrees. One where he had been studying from EU to USA, lived from Moscow to Downunder and training the trainers for top companies to government agencies from west continent to east sides. I am intrigued why not?

Be back after delivering some turkeys goodies. Meanwhile Merry X mas and Happy New Year.....

Most of the them responded in my survey by saying Great Wall is the ideal country and college to be. Pelik tapi benar, two of them are Malays. They have kids at SRJK ( C ) and will be enrolling them either in Mainland China or right here at Kampung which is about 1/2 hour drive from USJ - Xiamen University which has opened door for business.

One of them said China has had been making such fast pace progress that have shed the era of "Copyking". He is impressed with what he had seen in the Great Wall biz and graduates quality. Even in the entertainment field, iconic singer Shila Hamzah goes Buddha jumped over the Great Wall of China to perfect her singing talent and make a singing fortune out of it. Her net worth and fan base easily surpassed the other Malay female singer back in the Kampung.

He observed that China has been placing qualified experts irrespective of thier race and paid top monies to lure them to produce products or in R

The others though agreed U like Harvard and Oxford are highly rated in world ranking but it does not show much progress in thier own countries. So, it makes ringgit and sense to go east where the real progress is.

What is more important is how the graduate think and react after thier years of education. Do they have the extra competitive edge, personality and professionalism which can embrace the reality of working conditions and demands?

One of the bosses from construction said when he usually prefers graduates of TARC compared to higher ranking universities like UM or over the seas colleges because they are more reliable in thier job assignment given either they are engineers, surveyors or draughtsmen. And because he had hired them years ago, his firm management and staff to communicate and deals with China firms readily which is giving him sizable contracts.

He observed that China has been placing qualified experts irrespective of thier race and paid top monies to lure them to produce finer products or in R & D in many fields. Ali Baba has surpassed Amazon, DiDi has kick butt Uber and China banks has gained rankings in world financial standard. And they are building tracks across thier country and connecting the dots beyond.

And just look at the local TV media where a variety of Made in China programs were being aired. Are they because they are cheaper? No they were more impressive and able to attract the audience. I can attest to that where I knew of one Malay parent where she said she and her family is more interested to see China sings than American idol. or Malaysia idol production. And she doesnt really understand Mandarin!!! Pelik tapi Benar, she even notice the standard of spoken English among the hosts in the programs were better than our local rambutans hosts or hostess.

I have been taken Uber riders from Sunway to Subang universities, Petaling Jaya to Cyberjaya colleges. Many rides especially the late night outings from the colleges were to nightspots like Zouk or internet hangout spots among the students over 80 rides.

But never have I taken any Mainland Chinese in the local U to these hip hop spots. On 5 occasions out of my 3,000 rides, I have taken them either to the MCD to take a bite at burgers or Mamak joints. And I asked them why so late? "Hungry like a ghost after doing the assignments and need a coffee break otherwise no energy to continue". " No exam yet but have to excel in the assignments to be ready for it ", " If I fail, how to face China when I return home empty handed with chicken eggs in my result? "

    Statistic or coincidence?

Among the courses offered in Malaysia university , never take up medicine unless you are passionate about it.

I drove a fourth year student to Seremban way past midnite. And this is the story.

He is kinda rebel without cause where he chosen medicine instead of engineering. All because both of his parents are established engineers. He didnt want the extra advantage of parents looking over his shoulder or career when he graduated.

What he didnt know is he doesnt have time to do anything, no time even to revise his lectures where I picked him to work at the Seremban hospital where he got to report first thing in the morning. He could only hip hop between his studies. When he got time in public holidays , all he wants is to sleep.

I doubt doing medicine in Malaysia public universities is ideal to churn up medical graduates where thier schedule are so cramped up.

i disagree with the ranking of NUS above Duke... haha.
Berkeley below Oxford? hmmmm... come on...

if one doesn't pick on actual ranking nor cherry pick on individual uni but look at the schools in general, yeah, these are the top!

This above ranking from post #13 is not the ranking based on the standard methodology, it is " based on the world’s largest invitation-only opinion survey of leading academics. It asks scholars to name no more than 15 universities that they believe are the best for research and teaching, based on their own experience. "

    The standard ranking is here...

    QS : https://www.topuniversities.com/univ...-rankings/2018
    Times : https://www.timeshighereducation.com...#survey-answer

The ranking from post#13 show some leading Asian universities are in front of some of the historically renowned western unis which in my opinion is not possible because - the ranking's methodology itself is "unfair", it is rather impossible for non-English medium universities to score high points as they always unable to attract adequate international talents to teach (lecturer) and to learn (student/researcher) there, on top of their local talents. Not many people would want to learn another completely new language if he/she already has what it takes to go to good western universities.

For example, no way the academic standard of top universities in Japan/China/Germany (which used their native language as medium of instruction) are behind some English-medium universities in Hong Kong !! Just look at the laureate of international awards will tell the truth...
