Talk about car (relatively more expensive one), it is good to buy insurance that cover the "betterment" if you intend to keep the car more than 5 years.

Generally, insurance will cover 100% of the repair bill if the vehicle is less than 5 years. Above 5 years, vehicle owner is required to pay about 15%-20% as "betterment" of the total bill if new part/component is used as replacement.

15-20% can be substantial for most continental cars. For example, the HID headlamp (one headlamp only, not one pair) is at least RM5000 for a Swedish brand. 20% "betterment" means RM1000 from own pocket !!

The additional yearly insurance premium that cover "betterment" is around RM200. It is a small amount compares to the parts cost in the event you make insurance claim.

My friend's BMW hit the rear of an old Toyota. His car's right headlamp cracked, bumper dented and something inside the bumper is broken. Visually, the damage is not a big deal.

Repair cost is RM 13k. Claim insurance.

Someone in this company told me their car have gone thru a massive "revolvolution", gone are the days of the boring old man car..

This XC40 is a good looking car. Hope it is fitted with at least a T4 (preferably T5) to become a beautiful and powerful car unlike other pussy conti cars on the road.

    There is a T4 and T5 variant.

Another variant will have a 3 cylinder engine. Yes, Volvo also have a 3 cylinder engine.

Conti car fitted with a turbocharged 3 cylinder engine (maybe 1.4L or 1.6L max) can sell at a much more affordable price compares to the full-spec, higher-end conti car fitted with turbo 2.0L/2.5L engine.

I think there is a big demand for such small engine conti car because they are many people who like the emblem but struggle with the price. This price range allow them to stretch their monthly installment to the limit...

Never mind about the maintenance bill as most conti cars have free 5 years maintenance or 100,000km whichever is earlier. Just change a new car after 5 years and start the process again...

At the end, banks always win...

Q; WHY the hang ups about changing car after 5 years? Why not 6? 7? 8? yrs??? Any particular reasons?

Yes, 5 years free sevice plus a 5 year warranty ensures stress free car ownership. I have a Subaru on this terms.

Actually it is even better to sell the car with warranty remaining. Easier this way. I sold one in October with one year warranty remaining.

Because the vehicle warranty is 5 years or 3+2 years.

So, even the mileage is only 50km after 5 years, the car warranty period is still over.

For some of these conti drivers who have to pay rm2888 or rm3888 per month for 7 years, they CANNOT afford the major repair bill. For exp, one pair of blardy side mirror with BLIS sensor costs more than rm9000. So, it is better to change the car for a new one and start enjoying the 5 years warranty and free scheduled maintenance again.

Never mind the borrowing costs and the huge losses of depreciation because this money does not come out from wallet upfront. All these hidden losses are being nicely distributed into the 12 months x n years repayments, and n is at least 6 or more.

At the end, banks always win ..... but but but banks will lose to a gropu of slightly smarter people which is less than 0.01% of population...

For my own vehicle, I will keep 10 years or more (Japanese or European)

My logic is european car depreciates a lot more than Japanese car in the 1st 5 year. The depreciation rate is about the same after 10 years, what remain is the salvage value.

A RM130k Toyota will have about the same depreciation rate with a RM250k continental car after 10 years. Of course, since the vehicle selling price is different, the depreciation quantum is bigger for continental car.

A 5 year manufacturer's warranty is always better than a 3+2 or 2+3 extended warranties.

The +X years extended warranty is covered by an insurance company and have exclusions and excess clause. Making a claim is also more troublesome. Once I made such a claim but the excess amount cost more than the small part I am claiming. I just pay cash for the part.

a few yrs ago, Sold my 18yr old citreon SWagon for a song...Wa eyong kau poon! Infact I even pitied & proceeded to 'subsidise' the young couple buyer via another new service, plus a polish and then at JPJ, he ran outta money to pay for the road tax...HAHAHAHA.
I even gave him a 6month warranty and assured the young couple, (Wife mek Kelate preggy) that they can drive back to New Castle safely too!

In those years after 250,000km, i have only changed 2 air con compressors (japs), 2 aircon relays, 1 radiator cap and 1 fuel pump (to Peugeot type) and lotsa wipers and tyres...
So who said Eurocar no can last long time?

I also made an extended warranty (3+2) claim on one of my cars. The air-conditioning condenser leaked.
This item is covered in the first three years' manufacturer's warranty but excluded from the +2 years' extended warranty. I have to pay 2k for it.

This is the part I don't like about how the business is run here...

I have no problem to pay more or pay premium for value ... but I will go after them if I think they want to be funny.

To me, warranty should not be so complicated. It is either 5 years warranty from manufacturer... or 3 years from manufacturer and remaining 2 years warranty should also come from the manufacturer irrespective of whether the compensation money come from the insurer or from manufacturer. Warranty is between the vehicle owner and OEM, the insurer is just a 3rd party that earn a profit by mitigating risks.

So far, I have not encountered any warranty issue within the warranty period. My little experience dealing with MNC or so-called big corporations is - when these companies know they have more to lose, they will be very nice, nicer than my little pet dog...
