Talk about car (relatively more expensive one), it is good to buy insurance that cover the "betterment" if you intend to keep the car more than 5 years.

Generally, insurance will cover 100% of the repair bill if the vehicle is less than 5 years. Above 5 years, vehicle owner is required to pay about 15%-20% as "betterment" of the total bill if new part/component is used as replacement.

15-20% can be substantial for most continental cars. For example, the HID headlamp (one headlamp only, not one pair) is at least RM5000 for a Swedish brand. 20% "betterment" means RM1000 from own pocket !!

The additional yearly insurance premium that cover "betterment" is around RM200. It is a small amount compares to the parts cost in the event you make insurance claim.

My friend's BMW hit the rear of an old Toyota. His car's right headlamp cracked, bumper dented and something inside the bumper is broken. Visually, the damage is not a big deal.

Repair cost is RM 13k. Claim insurance.
