I read with interest that Google has become the most admiring company in Malaysia.
Somehow, I believe all these garbage invention are wasting precious human brain and time.
I don't see the value of pouring the best brains into the development of such useless gadgets like mobile phone, social media, etc.

I read the story of this young girl in Singapore published in The Edge Malaysia weeks ago.
From the article, I think she made her 1st gold pot from Citigroup share but this is not the point. The efforts behind the scene and her determination that made her to be in a position to grab the opportunity is the one distinguish her and others.
Anna Vanessa Haotanto became a self-made millionaire at 29, an age when many people of this age are spending most of their time with smartphone and social media. After graduating from high school, Haotanto decided to study finance at the Singapore Management University. She attended as many classes as she could to increase her knowledge of the subject, sometimes without earning any exam credits.
As her parents’ business failed during the Asian financial crisis. She decided to get a part-time job as a waitress and retail assistant while still attending classes. She also gave tuition to school-going children and participated in internship programmes at a few companies. She adopted a frugal lifestyle not only to help pay off her parents’ debt but also to buy a house for the family after she started working.

Based on the article, I think she realized being the eldest, she has to do something for the family which was hit hard by the financial crisis but what can she do as a student because everyone starts with about the same salary scheme after graduating from uni. The conventional curve will take years or decade before one can even think of having a break. I think someone has opened her eyes in which she believed a fast-track, risk-taking job in finance world can expedite the process.
When I studied in uni at the beginning, I wasn't an ambitious person. I think getting a graduate job in a MNC will be one of the best things after graduation until one day during my 3rd year. I met a senior who had graduated in mechanical engineering and worked in an Austrian consultancy firm. Somehow during a casual chat, he told me there is a lot of difference between starting salary of RM1500 and RM2500 even though the difference is just RM1000 and one should know waste time looking for an ordinary comfort job like majority of other graduates.

Nowadays, many people (young people especially) think the digital world is the in-thing without realizing they are just the users of the product. They spend enormous amount of time there without knowing time is finite.
They are fascinated by the success stories of facebook, whatapp, etc. People pay less attention to the brick and mortar, and probably think these are old-fashioned things.

It reminds me of a famous HK author, 倪匡 (Ni Kuang). He has written over 300 Chinese science fiction novels, and more than 400 film scripts for Shaw Brothers. You can find his books in different languages including Bahasa Indonesia.
He grew up in Shanghai and worked with the Communist Party as a prison officer in 1950s. He was tasked with writing death sentences when he was posted to inner Mongolia. In inner Mongolia, he pissed off his superior and has to run to HK for his life. I am interested on his early life in HK..
When he decided to “jump ship and swim” to HK, he couldn’t speak nor understand Cantonese at all. He practically is an “alien” in HK and whatever literature training of him is useless. He has to work in the construction site as coolie. In his autobiography, he gave a very detailed description on the wages being a hard labour.
He was paid HKD2.90 for one day hard work but because he is not local, the “agent” took HKD0.90 as commission, so he was left with HKD2.00 everyday if he got a job. Generally, one needed HKD3.00 for daily expenses at that time… !! He then took out more dangerous job in the construction site and was paid HKD4.90 and managed to make ends meet.
One day, he read the newspaper left by someone in the site office, he told his coolie friends that he can write as good as those who posted their articles in the newspaper. Of course, everyone thought he is bullshitting and made fun of him. He suddenly realized although he couldn’t speak fluent Cantonese but the beauty of the Chinese language scripts is it doesn’t really matter who read the article (Hakka, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hokkien, etc.), they will understand the written scripts of Mandarin.
He wrote an article about his past job as a prison officer in inner Mongolia to a local daily and waited for reply. The editor-in-chief replied and wanted to meet him to verify whether the article was genuinely written by him. He got his first article accepted with a fee of HKD90 !! He couldn’t sleep for 2 nights (day and night) because this amount is almost one month of hard labour work…
He then realized he can make more money by creating his own storybooks and writing movie scripts. He was the first Chinese who became a millionaire by writing books n the Chinese literature history.

I read his books when I was a young boy, he is my second or third favorite Chinese writer. He is still a gap behind my 1st writer.. I think they were many people like him in China at that time who were trained formally in Chinese literature but they didn’t know how to maximize the value of their strengths, and didn't have the opportunity also. I believe when people are contented and occupied by useless things that everybody else is fascinated to do, they can’t think and can’t think a bit further. They will remain at that level and when they realize they are behind, it is more or less at the stage of “over the prime”. This is happening among the younger generations here..
