In early 60s, I was helping out in a relative's sundry shop after school & there was an abacus.

Talking about abacus, here is something I learnt recently.
My HK friends both husby & wife started a Tuition School 3 years back.
They use specialist teachers from various schools both Government & Private who like to teach part time.
ALL subjects that are taught in schools from Year 7 to Year 12 are covered.
This Tuition School pays about AUD$70 per hour to the specialist tuition teacher and students pay about AUD$40 per hour to this school.
Imagine, a Math Tuition Class of say 10 students, that's AUD$400 vs AUD$70
So my friends are laughing to the banks.
That's beside the point.
What I wanted to say is this.
With Maths, my friend said modern kids do not think anymore.
They only think of calculators, calculators, calculators & calculators.
For example, one big girl I came across working in Mc Donald had to use a calculator to add up $4 + $3.85
So they introduce Abacus & these students of all background started to think.

You'd be surprised how Maths has helped us, even without our knowing. Firstly, it has helped us organize our thoughts, sharpened our sense of logic, etc. The skills of connectivity (e.g. bē-4ac to trigo to motion etc) help the brain to understand patterns, identify common building blocks, to solve 'situations/problems'.
A friend says it reminds him of playing mahjong...move this term here, convert that expression there, to get a 'pong'!...quite like poetry in equations/inequalities. Something like seeing a thing/problem from different angles and the picture becomes much clearer. Once the mind is mapped for this response, the reflex can get transferred to other areas in life...

I hate the bloody exam q that asked me to
1) calculate how long it will take to fill a bath tub measuring 4.5' x 2.1'X 6.9' with the leaky tap dripping water at 1milli lit per 2.3 sec...

2) 5 girls travelling in a train at 75mph to a destination 266miles away, carried 2 gross apples and 1.5gross oranges. 2 girls each ate 1 apple every 25min, 3 girls ate at 19min/apple.After a pause of 33mins, 3 girls ate 1.5 orange every 17.5min, 1 girl 27mins and the other girl went to the toilet for 12mins... How many miles would the train have covered when they finished eating all the bananas?

Why hate this question, this is a kiddy stuff..
Time taken = Volume of bath tub / leaky tap flow rate
Volume = a x b x c x [m] .... [m] is conversion factor from feet to cm
Volume = am x bm x cm = abcm3
Flow rate = 1 / 2.3 = 0.43 ml/sec (cm3/sec)
So, the blardy time to fill the bath tub = 4.5 x 2.1 x 6.9 x (12 x 2.54)3 / 0.43
= 4.29 x 106 second
= 0.07 x 106 minutes
or just simply 1.93 x 103 hours....
They were eating blardy apples and oranges all the while .... since when they ate bananas ??
Or they changed their mind while you were in toilet ???
