Fom my experience of the reliability and quality of local taxi in Japan, I doubt uber or other similar service can survive in Japan. Recently, i asked the hotel to book a taxi at 6.30am to catch an early airport train. The journey from hotel to the train station is less than 20min. It only cost ¥1500 (RM60). If I use subway train, the cost is ¥600 ( ¥200 x3 persons) but it is a hassle to travel by subway with big luggages. It is good to get a cab when there are 2-3 persons for short journey ..
During my last trip in London, I also hired a cab from Kensington to St. Pancreas international station via the hotel. Quite a distance which took about 40min. Somehow I just don't trust those people who are not a driver from a legitimate taxi company in a foreign country. .
