    Crowdfunding for overseas education

I happened to read this from Vulcan Post. Following is the link and extract of the article....

    https://vulcanpost.com/580999/9-jpa-...-work-instead/

"Earlier this year, the Malaysian government made an announcement that bursaries would only be provided for students to continue their studies locally. Many students who aimed to live their dream of travelling overseas for the sake of their higher education came crashing down to reality with the lack of their own personal financial capabilities. What was supposed to be the chance of a lifetime to study in a globally ranked top university is now diminished....."

Following is the link of the students' profile. My thought is that if they are not able to go to the universities they want, why don't they try Singapore?

We have pretty good universities too. Both NUS and NTU are at position 12 & 13 in world ranking or first and second in recent Asian University ranking. Further more, we provide scholarship to those international students who need financial assistance. If their result is good they may proceed to post tertiary education under scholarship with guarantee job in civil service. By the way, our civil servants are paid quite well.

Yes, this has been reported for quite sometime (about few weeks here especially in Chinese papers) after the 1gomen failed to honor their promises to this batch of Bursary students. The JPA will only offer scholarship to studenst studying in local universities (public or private) from this year onwards ....

A brief of the Bursary Program

The objective of the Bursary program is to get the straight A SPM students to study in government funded pre-U program. Once the students successfully enroll into world’s best university for undergraduate degree, they will be fully sponsored by JPA.

My answer to your questions - "why don't they try Singapore ?".

The answer is simple. If you are a Malaysian student in this Bursary program in which government will fully sponsor the fees and you have to serve a binding contract with the government upon graduation, you will apply top universities in UK and US like Cambridge and Stanford University, not NUS in Singapore, not HK University in HK, not Peking Univesity in PRC or Tokyo Univesity in Japan although these Asian universities are among the best in the world also..

    My comment to these students.

    1. Others don't owe you an overseas degree irrespective of how brilliant you are. Scholarship is not your right, it is just a privilege.

    2. They should give up the hope of going to UK and US if their family can’t afford it. They should also reject the JPA scholarship offer to study in local universities.

    3. Send a fresh application to study in Singapore now and move on... and pay your future taxes to any country that treasure you.

Life is a long journey, not getting what you want now, can be a blessing .

Well I think those students have already planned to study overseas since they have very good results which entitled them to qualify for the scholarship. Maybe now it is too late to change to other options and that why they requested for help.

Sejarah Hari Ini - Japan became a rising sun after sending thier students to overseas in the Meiji era. Today, after Deng open policy, thousands of Chinese students were send or go on their own to overseas. For what China is today as the second largest economy - it was not just because of foreign investment but a pool of worldwide experience and educated students who came back to structure the foundation.

It is a shame that Malaysian Gomen does not place importance of education to deserving students as the wheels of vehicle to enhance economy. In fact, Singapore has had been wrestled quality students from us as soon as with SPM level. One of my former worker's sister has graduated with the help of full Sekolahship after SPM and is earning decent salary in SING dollars..

There was a call to plead for Malaysian students to come back couple of years back. But what is the response especially those graduates who were sponsored by the foreigner scholarships or out of thier family funding? And the incentives for them in remuneration and benefits?

Pelik tapi benar , 400,000 graduates remained unemployed in Malaysia!!

BTW, Some students with great result may not be given the choice of studies to major in with MY Sekolahship.......

Scholarship is not a free ride but you got to jump off the page.

And this is how he jump off the page with both legs to dazzle Harvard Dean for scholarship.

I knew of some who never came back because of job opportunities and prospect of promotion especially if you are not saudara saudari of gangnam party.

As for some whose families ran out of monies due to economy or fund demise while on overseas, they stayed on washing dishes , flipping newspapers to doorsteps or cleaning supermarkets. Of of them is my brother (70's) while the others were my classmates (80's). Today, my brother is still working in the NZ city council way past 60 with sons graduated with scholarships in MBBS.

They can always try for the next intake. The application for Singapore universities for 2016 /2017 intake is already closed. There are 2 windows of application. One is around Nov and the other is around Mar.

For these international students, if they wish, they may apply in this coming Nov for 2017/2018 matriculation. In the application they may indicate for scholarship or bursary as financial assistance although it is not ASEAN scholarship.

Following is the link for NUS application.

    Just to add a point...

With the exception of Thye Jye Quan who is offered to study medicine in Cambridge and another girl who is going to Michigan University, the rest are going to UCLA..

I don't see much problem to get into UCLA. I keep close contact with my nephews and nieces who were offered by Imperial College London, UCLA California and Cambridge University , l know a bit about the enrolment process..

If you click the second link from your 1st post, you will find an attached offer letter from the university of each of the student.

Since they have been offered a place to pursue undergraduate studies, they should have completed the pre-U requirement.

From what I read the offer letters, it looks like some are being offered through their prelim results therefore there are some conditions being imposed in the offer letter by the Cambridge University and University College of London. Other than UCLA which I can't tell, the universities from UK look like is a conditional offer.
