    I have never recalled hearing people complain of running their A/C's at high fan speed and at 16C, and yet complain of not being able to sleep and perspiring

    People are complaining about 'doubling' up on their charges, but the key is the increase in usage which can be easily verified on the bills.....With the tiered system of charges.....bills can double up easily with increased usage.

    My only wonder is.....Some say, they have not increased their usage.....so......Can these new electronic meters 'go wonky' with the 'higher than norm' temperatures outside.??.....I don't think we have experienced such an extended heatwave before.
    Good point Kuma, but we never lower down the temp, in fact using the same temp settings. In u notice Malaysia always in hot temp. True, I never hear PPL complaint tat too bout lower aircon temp
    Causing high bill. If so, the hike nvr be significant like double n triple.

    I think you are making biased accusation on TNB. Do you have evidence that they point fingers and confused the consumers..?

    You are pointing fingers at TNB if you can't justify your accusation.

    Someone mentioned about tiered rate that can affect the charges significantly. I looked at the charges at different tiers, and relate the increase with the working principles of air conditioner. I believe I have the answers for the electricity bill double up.

    Will show you the numbers when I'm free..

    The tier rate
    1) 1-200kwh --> 0.218
    2) 201-300kwh --> 0.334
    3) 301-600kwh --> 0.516
    4) 601-900kwh --> 0.546
    5) 901kwh above --> 0.571

    Your previous bill is around RM40-50 which should be in category 1
    200 x 0.218 = 43.6

    Now your bill double up to RM90+, I believe this is due to higher usage of electricity from the 1hp air-conditioner and the subsequent higher rate in category 2.

    First, you have to understand how an air-conditioner work. There is a thermostat in air-cond to switch off the compressor when the desired temperature is reached. When weather is very hot, the small 1hp air-cond is not capable to cool down the room to the pre-set temperature WITHOUT the compressor running all the time. The compressor have to run for a much longer hour and stop for a much shorter time in order to keep the room cool, this consumes much more energy even if you did not change your temperature setting.

    I am not surprised to see a spike in the electricity usage for your case because your air-cond has to work harder continuously every night for the whole month. Hence, a 50% increase of electricity will easily bring you to the total usage of more than 300kwh.

    Charges for 300kwh
    200 x 0.218 = 43.6
    100 x 0.334 = 33.4
    There is a 6% GST on higher usage
    6% x (43.36+33.4) = 4.62
    Total bill is 81.62

    You see, with a 50% increase in electricity usage, the bill has increase almost 100%. , and this is just from category 1 to category 2. For those who are previously in category 2 or 3, imagine if your are not in category 4 or 5 of the tier rate !!

    Of course, you can dispute that the surge of electricity usage of the air-cond may not be as high as 50%. I guess it is very much depend on how good is the cooling efficiency of your air-cond, the age of your air-cond, etc.

    Hi GaryL,

    Good morning. I know the calculation. The point here is, previous years and months the usage and bill almost the same, the sudden hike is like double triple due EL Nino (claimed by TNB). If you read Kuma post, 4k bill hike to 30K (OMG). Some normal monthly usage 200-250, suddenly hike to 600-700. These already causing a lot suspicious. Was it new meter? or Was it El Nino? Or, your usage changed daily? If the usage changed, I assume not much changes. If so it wont be hike until double and triple? And Not only happen alone, I believe whole Malaysia, if you check TNB CARELING FB. These need TNB to take deep justify and clarify more, and dont put in EL NINO as main caused. If EL NINO, put 2015 same month, also have EL NINO and HAZY too, why the bill never hike such dramatically like now? Why now hike double triple? And Why so many complaint such hike? why? . Of cause, Malaysian need a root cause analysis from TNB. Not just blame EL NINO. Some house got new meter, some dont have. Why?

    haha......thats many why need to be answer from TNB.

    Garyl has the calculation based on rates by Tnb on an assumed usage Kwh units. If you need to know exactly why , you would have to give your consumption figures before and after , assuming that it is of constant average load . Your peak load if known is also useful to eliminate errors .
    These calculation tell no lies and without these figures Tnb won't be convinced they are on the wrong.

    I am only talking about YOUR case, and I refer to your 1st post in this thread.

    Other cases like the 4k bill hike to 30k bill is not what I wanted to discuss beacuse I have no clue of the details. People can sensationalize their case, not telling the truth or not giving a complete picture in order to get attention.

    Back to your case. Look at the tier rate again

    The tier rate
    1) 1-200kwh --> 0.218
    2) 201-300kwh --> 0.334
    3) 301-600kwh --> 0.516
    4) 601-900kwh --> 0.546
    5) 901kwh above --> 0.571

    You are paying RM40-50 previously. This mean you are already at the max usage of category 1 (The max charges for this category is RM43.6). Any increase will easily put you in the next category and thus an increase in consumption will result in a bigger hike in bill.

    Refer post #16, I share an example of electricity usage of my Dad. His bill has not changed much previously and now, still within the RM80-100. I believe the main reason is he is already in category 2 previously and is paying the higher rate and thus the higher usage now is less significant in the charges.

    Fyi, I am paying around RM400+ before the hot season started, my bill now has increased slightly to RM500+. I believe the same reason applies also in which I was alreay paying at the higher rate of category 3 and the increase in usage now has not moved me to the next category. Look at the tier rate, category 3 has a wider range of 300kwh (301-600) vs. the smaller range of only 100 kwh for the lower usage category.

    I don't like a monopoly utility company just like you guys, and it is not my intention to defend their extra-ordinary high bill. I like to look at facts and numbers unlike some people who like to join the crowd to blame and throw unfounded accusations.

    You are right. But why now hike so much? My Usage is the same as previous months.

    Is your Dad usage increased? For example low down aircon temp?

    haha....no body asking you go monopoly company utility, or defend extra the extra ordinary bill, me too, and so others. Nobody wants to blame its, its sudden hikes, definitely need an explanation. In this boleh land and this situation, anything can happen. Look at the lower middle income, they suffer the most.

    haha...no offence ya, mainly for discussion, feedback etc etc. Definitely need to find out how to reduce electricity usage and to be more greener.....

    Happy reading folks.......hope next month bill hikes more.....

    Lazy to reply nowadays. MOST people just like to listen and read what they wanted to listen and read. I guess that's why FB is popular - for people to moan and rant..

    Also, I believe this is why a society (regardless of which country) is always structured in a pyramid shape..
