Kuma, you know..I lost confidence in China food products when horror stories started to emerge many years back. The only made in China product I still occasionally eat is the Fried Dace with Salted Black Bean for no one else makes it! hahaha

However, now that you mentioned the "shiokedoness" of Ma Ling (I grew up eating it well into the 90s but stopped sometime before the end of the decade), I can still recall how great it tasted . Say, when it comes back to you, please let us know the brand of the made in Sing pork luncheon meat, k?
Delightfully side-tracking so eat your heart out, Mr Chang!

Fried Dace with Salted Black Bean? Hey! I'm onto that too. No thumbs! I swear! Had to be the one with the red eagle printed across the lid. The other type is not that great.

Sing pork luncheon meat? Is it available over here, kuma?

Ya. Quite agree. The original Ma Ling from way back when was absolutely mouth watering. There was a time when they came out with two versions of Ma Ling. There's the original and then there's the fake which costs half the price.

    Super super side-track!

I remembered the siew mai from yester-decades? Absolutely stunningly delicious... *slurp*
    Sidetracking galore!

Yes I do remember, rather vaguely though. Wonder what the copycat version was made of? Very little pork and lotsa ... I dunno ...

Always loved the siew mai but more so the malai-koh which I grew up eating in eat-whenever-you-like land, Ipoh. When I moved to KL, I was in for much disappointment. The malai-koh here tasted absolutely horrid ! However, in recent years I discovered this dimsum eatery along Jln Sungai Besi. The malai-koh here is decent and quite close in taste to the ones I had in Ipoh, albeit half in size and triple in price!

Stay tuned for more sidetracking! *while Chang remains unaware* lol

Well, pig is a popular and expensive livestock in China.

Do you think they have enough pork to feed themselves ??
Do you think they have excess pork to go to the can factory ??

Try to stretch your imagination a bit further..

    - if the luncheon pork is pork, what kind of pig that eventually ended up as luncheon pork ??

    - also, if the luncheon pork is not pork, what is really inside the “luncheon pork” ??

What the copycat version is made of? Dude. You don't want to know ... though I did hear all kinds of tall tales.

I wonder why they call it malai-koh. Were they the first to discover malai-koh, you think? I remembered this lady in Old Town (PJ) who used to make very nice cupcake-like malai-koh. Hers was special because they're pandan leaf green and filled with gula melaka grated coconut. Her malai-koh maker was a huge contraption so the minimum order was 50 pieces.

    She's probably gone by now.

Speaking of dimsum eatery in Sg Besi. Have you tried the wantan mee by the side of the road. I don't understand why the place is crowded. Their noodles are just mediocre. Even Duck King served better noodles than them.

    Oooooooh .... Did you notice? We're still side-tracking. ...

    Hyper Sidetracking ........

If you were to venture to the remote part away from the city , they have more pigs visible roaming the countryside. One thing about pork in china is that very likely it is fat more than lean....

Here we go sidetracking merrily some more!

Why do they call it malai-koh? Guess we 'younger' generation won't know. It goes way back. Those a generation before us should have an inkling or the full story, methinks. Unfortunately, my parents are no longer here, so can't check with them. Dude, do you know anyone older than urm..us? Check with them and report back, please. haha

That wantan mee eatery by the side of Jalan Sungai Besi (walking distance from Wisma Mah Sing)? Yeah. It never fails to amaze me, you know. Everyday it's packed! So impressed was I by the huge crowd, one day I decided to drop in for a meal. I walked away totally disappointed man. The wantan mee was bland, the charsiew hopeless, the place warm and sticky. But it's still packing in the crowd ! What gives? *scratches head*

Shall we sidetrack some more, mate? (Chubby Checker's Let's Limbo Some More plays in the background)

You know CCY, the best part of pork (and most unhealthy but oh boy does it taste heavenly!) is its fatty meat. Lean meat sucks! Period

Hahahah.... i know lots of dudes older than us but lets start with mr chang. He is older than us. Do you suppose he'll join in the sidetracking spree?

Personally, i think .. maybe the malaikoh originated with the malays. Who knows?

    Going back to the topic.

Kuma. So if Putin is Gog and Russia is Magog, shouldn't you be focusing your attention up there? How about doing that magical thing you do with your fingers on the keyboard and tell us a little more about the development on that end.

    Thanks, kuma.

Kuma, they say run to the hills when Armageddon is upon us.

That kinda reminded me of this house we saw in ipoh 2 months ago. Still under construction. It is well placed in a cul de sac but its backyard stretches all the way to the lime stone hill. You can tunnel that a way andmake your own personal cave. Fantastic nuke shelter ... except .... nah....

Still, it was such a cool house.

The Sidetrack Boogie continues with gusto

Let's hope Mr Chang comes in to offer his two cents

I tend to agree with you, dude. The name itself, malai-koh, does suggest it originated from the Malay community. If so, I wonder how does the original version looks like.

    Sidetracking some more!

Wow, that was some classified info alright! Reveal it to the world at large and be damned!

    Sidetracking halts momentarily

I totally agree with you, dude, that war is a terrible thing. Don't understand why some people have to kill each other to attain joy. Where is the fun (for want of a better word) in that?
