Australia manufacturing is losing their competitiveness due to the small pool of population (small domestic market) and higher wages. The car manufacturers couldn’t rely on domestic sales for survival but they couldn’t export their way out of trouble either. Other big names like Ford, Mitsubishi, Toyota have all shut down their plants in Australia.....
Here are some interesting comments from the locals.
" This has been going on since mid 80's under LABOUR when they reduced tariffs on cars, clothing, footwear & electrical. All the name of 'free trade'. The final nail was FTO with japan, south korea and china. Employment is more casualised, wage growth is flat. Generations of aussie will never have home owenership. Jobs are being automated, online or offshore. !! "
" Is Australia a developed country? No car industry, no electronics industry, no advanced ship building industry (submarines are designed and built by French), no aviation industry, no space industry, no power generation equipment industry, no petrol refinery industry "
