Follow Penang Hokkien rate lah....
It is the thought that counts.![]()
" In the land of the blind the one-eyed-jack is king."
RM50? Where do you stay,so that i can bring my children ,nephew, nieces etc to your house.Siow la you!
I am not poor nor would I say I am rich... I am just a semi-retired corporate man dealing in some investment projects in Indonesia in mining, infrastructural and even do land deals... and every year I wrap RM4 ang pows and RM10 ang pows - for kids we meet in house visits we do not know well and the RM10 for kids of our friends.... that is all we give out. To me, ang pow is a gift to accompany good prosperity wishes - its not like BR1M or anything and it shouldn't be....
Friends, sorry. I have been misunderstood. I had not intended my post to be condescending in any way.
What I meant was that the angpows given seemed to vary across different regions. $2 angpows were still being given in northern states like Ipoh. Over here, I have seen $5 given to strangers and between $10 to $50 given to friends kids. More for family members and close friends.
That made me wonder about the rates in Penang as well as the southern states. Maybe it's because different state practice different custom. If not, then perhaps what I've observed were just isolated cases.
BTW, if I'm not mistaken, $4 angpows were never given. Sei sei saeng! Not auspicious.
Dervish,
We gave RM10 angpow to friends’ children and neighbours’ children who visit us in CNY. For nephew and nieces, the angpow is RM50.
We have a few relatives who reside in Singapore. When we visit them or when they come to KL during CNY, we prepare angpow with SGD50 note for their children.
Have been many years we gave angpow this way..
Then on Day 2 when the MPPP truck comes around to collect rubbish, there is a standard RM20 ang pow and a carton of F&N Orange canned drinks to their rep from every Chinese household....
Recently, I heard something absurd.
Apparently, when you go visiting, tangerines are okay but oranges are a no-no. Reason: Oranges sounded like "charmmm". To circumvent the "charmmmmmness", give 5 so it becomes "ummm charmmmmm"
*shakes head*
During my mom's time, Ngan Yin groundnuts were given. Something about "chiak lau lau"
You will know when they arrive... one of them will ring the door / gate bell and all the rest of the Indonesian and Bangla workers will shout from the truck in Penang Hokkien "Keong Hee Keong Hee...." hahahaha... so happy as they all calling for their annual dividends to be grouped together and divided by end of Day 3....
On NY eve normally there is a God of Properity will visit your house and paste a red paper with 4D in it.What i like is these are young children and they use starch to glue it
