This tragedy is very bad for Sabah where tourists in great numbers from PRC, Korea, Japan come from.

Earlier, I was surprised to read that they boarded from Tanjung Aru instead of Jesselton Point or Sutera Harbour or Beach Hotel.

The above link explains it clearly

KK City Hall demolishes pier from where catamaran began ill-fated trip

Good job KK Mayor Datuk Yeo B. H.

Maybe a notice written in Bahasa, English, Japanese, Korean & Chinese should drive the message home about this illegal jetty.

This is a tragedy but it is avoidable, in my opinion.

    - The Chinese tourists should be more vigilant on the inbound tour packages that offered to them. One way is buy from reputable tour agencies, not from online tour portals which operate as middleman without registration with the relevant authorities.

    - Those measures by the Sabah state gomen to demolish illegal pier, tighten control and registration on illegal tour agencies should have been done since day one, not after a tragedy happened. This is a failed state run by morons and asshoxx.

I still fail to understand people pay so much attention on a lot of other things like a mobile phone...but when come to safety, they are willing to try their luck by subscribing to cheaper offers.

    1. The catamaran is not designed for 30 persons, and worse it is not designed for commercial tourism. The catamaran was specifically designed for WWF in 2007 for maritine ecology research. It is also not designed to be used in choppy waters and strong wind conditions.

2.The skipper and crews are bunch of untrained asshoxx who are not supposed to take charge of 30 lives onboard a ship. One of the missing victims is the crew (although I sympathize with his family members), I shake my head when I read his previous working experience. His previous job less than a year ago is a helper in the wet market.

    3. The catamaran capsized after about one hour leaving the illegal jetty but the incident was only reported 11 hours later !! It clearly shown the lack of proper communication equipment for the crews to notify the authorities. It is also a clear evidence the lack of proper sea survival training of the crews.

Thank God, 20 of the tourists were rescued by a passing-by fishing boat, not your apanama marine police, navy or other search and rescue teams. Another 6 victims are still missing.

Re Posts #183 & 184, yes, this is what happened when middlemen in PRC find ways and means to earn more $$$$ from their own country men and boarded from an illegal fishermen jetty instead of the 3 designated jetties for tourists in Kota Kinabalu.

This is typical of mainland Chinese who go for the cheapest & expect the best.

When I went across to Pulau Manukan and Pulau Sapi last year, we boarded from Jesselton Point.

When we reached there safely, they radio-called the mainland immediately.

When the weather is bad, trips were cancelled or postponed.

Supply and demand.. I think it is easier to tackle the supply side.

Charge the boat skipper and the two crews who are presently detained by police for negligence and manslaughters. Hopefully, stiff jail sentence can reduce the supply of illegal boat operators.

The boat was meant for 12 passengers only but instead taken 28.

Same mentality with those who renovate their house without approval…. and those who use vehicle not registered for commercial purpose to ferry people around..

I think 6 months for a few lives is a laughing matter.

Something is NOT right in Boleh.
