A nice match-up in the two semi-finals. Brazil vs Germany and Argentina vs Netherlands. Two South American powerhouse against their European counterpart.

Three teams are ex-champions whereas the Netherlands is three times losing finalist. Twice they lost to the host nation ~ 1974 to West Germany and 1978 to Argentina. Will history repeat? They lost to Spain in 2010 in South Africa.

Brazil can be beaten though they do have home ground advantage. With Neymar out and their Captain missing the next match Germany's odds just improved.

From the way the last 8 games were played out, my bet is on Holland or Germany... Brazil without Neymar... sorry lah! Same thing, Argentina was really weak and not playing as a team, with Messi out of form and Angel Di maria out with a thigh injury... its Holland or Germany....

Argentina-Belgium: More like an ordinary league game....very pedestrian. Like Belgium's coach says: " Argentina was ordinary..." The only goal, I thought was a fluke moment - well, World Cup matches are won or lost by unexpected events sometimes - in this case, a deflection off a Belgian defender. Try watching the buildup to the goal several times to draw your conclusions...was it skill or fluke..? I am not taking anything away from Argentina's win...a win is a win in a WC tournament, sad but true...! Sadly, Belgium lacks the "WC DNA" - the big game experience, passion, anticipation and organisation - for the big occasion - it somehow doesn't have the energy or urgency we saw in earlier matches when the ball was in the opponents' penalty areas. The only bright spot was the goalkeeper. Argentina actually was shooting blanks the whole match, considering it has one of the most "lethal" forward line in the tournament..

Holland-Costa Rica: This one gave a fitting finale to the QFinals roundup - it has drama, actions up and down the field, a surprisingly bold substitution...! One wonders how many more rabbits Van Gaal would pull out of his magical hat...?!...and there were not many significant blatant fouls...and what a "krul" way to end Costa Rica's dreams!

On to the semifinals - "second last step to heaven...." !!! On paper, Germany seems to have the edge over Brazil. However, Joachim Low won't have historical data to plan his strategies since Brazil would now be playing with a different team from the past. Let's see if Scolari has other latent stars in his squad to replace Neymar and Thiago. Let's see who the referee is and pray a certain high standard of officiating is maintained. And the crowd!!!.....hey anybody forgot one time yellow colour was banned...?!!!

On the Argentina-Holland match, interesting to see how the coaches plan their strategies. My concern is that Van Persie seems jaded after his spectacular goal against Spain....hope he rise up to the occasion. Again the crowd would be a factor....but I believe Holland has the maturity and professionalism to rise to a big game occasion. May the better team win..!

As always the perennial debate: Who would be in the finals?....an all South American match-up or an all European one..?...or is it a South American-European showdown...? Like someone says: "The ball is round....!"

    Cheers!

Third time ain't fun.....Germany embarks on a third attempt to enter the finals of the World Cup. It lost in the semis in 2006 and 2010 to Italy (0-2) and Spain (0-1) respectively. A hattrick is supposed to be good news....but a hattrick of losses...?.....depressing!

    Cheers!

While everyone is discussing on which country will go through, I have observed something about players reactions every time they were brought down during these games. They seem to be acting like little kids complaining to their parents - "ko-ko tripped me!!! He is at fault!!!". Just hilarious looking at it from that perspective.

One more thing... there seem to be a lot more divers nowadays. It's a wonder how they perfected their dives to even deceive the referees and his assistants.
