Indian Muslim aka mamak restaurants overcharging... What's your view?

The Ant Daily - Overcharging prevalent at Indian Muslim restaurants

I'm not a frequent patron of mamak restaurant but I do feel the charges are not cheap. As a Chinese, I have the choice to go to chinese outlets and eat economy rice for cheaper. Which brings me to wonder what handsome profit these mamak restaurants, especially the more famous chain restaurants are making with low wages but high charges.

Sometimes i find the single independent mamak outlets have better food and cheaper charges.

Note: Apologies if the word Mamak is deemed sensitive to some.

As Malaysians loves curry,is there any rest.sells curry 24/7 ? .Opening a 24 hour joint is no easy tasks, sometimes also get rob.The only thing you can do is don,t go there lah.like a forumer said cook it at home.Me too i don,t fancy mamak shops but once in a while roti sardine is delicious where i just had one in Sri melur SS19 but no drinks.

Yes, I agree, those 'independent' shop often have better food, but only 'slightly lower' prices these days though

The term 'mamak' is believed offensive these days by some for unknown reasons......but I believe its origins would come from the term 'Uncle' which in Tamil is "Ma-Mah".

In my younger days.....when we want to summon the coffeeshop owner, we'd call him 'Uncle'.....these days I hear people just yelling out 'Kopi...Kopi!'

If it expensive there, then don't go there, simple as that.

Haven't you heard of the term used by our parents "you do Mamak arithmetics ah?" when we can't add up properly? I don't think our parents / grandparents used those terms for no good reasons....

If you want a discount at a banana leaf restaurant, always ask the Mamak fler to recount the bill item-by-item in front of you - he will always say... tak apalah, kurang 5 ringgit lah...

p.s. the term Mamak is not derogatory - people still shout at an Indian Muslim by this name loudly and in public especially in Penang... it becomes sensitive lately because some Mamaks in politics esp PERKASA wants to be recognised as a Malay... so we now have to be careful

Why go to Mamak stalls if it is expensive ? There are other cheaper shops around.

I've stopped going to Margaret Yong Tau Foo after they raise it to rm 1.50 per piece.

Agree! We have a choice! Consumers are kings. If we all don't eat there they will no one to raise their prices to! Simple as that. It is because there are people who are still willing to pay the inflated prices.

They will continue to thrive lah...this is Malaysia!...there will be just as many people who still insist on patronizing places eventhough its pricy..always been like that, unless the shop close by itself or determined as life threatening.
Depressing, pessimistic or negative view, thats my take based on own observation. And of course I have a choice...I try best to avoid eating out if I can (save patronizing places which I know as reasonable)...am one of the very few who won't make any difference to ease the situation. Prices go up, it doesn't come down. Just like encouraging majority people not to buy a new car for few years..it DOES NOT WORK!..not here.

Actually, for the popular ones like Line Clear and Beratur, so far no complaints have been heard.... The complaints are mainly for the chain outlets and of cos Kayu got mentioned the most... Even before appearing on the paper or facebook, they have been known to be expensive, since they started the SS2 branch.

Food leftover from previous business day, some old as it is, some cooked as a different dish...
Sometimes, we do that too at home, especially those dishes from CNY reunion dinner...
