In June 2009, Air France Flight 447 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 216 passengers.
Rescuers only managed to retrieve bodies and debris from the plane after several days, while investigators took nearly two years to get to the main wreckage including black boxes.
A lot of ppl cursing why so slow in locating the aircraft but don't understand it's not a crash on land where the smoke and debris are easy to spot from the air. At sea, it's many times more challenging... most of the debris will sink and the sea is not like your swimming pool, there's waves... and there's no landmark. It takes time to comb the probable areas, not just 1 area as they have to explore various route it might have taken from the last point it appeared on radar. The trajectory it takes before it made impact with the sea surface. And since there wasn't any indication of the aircraft distress beacon signal to help trace its location...
No one knows what happened, no one can say or dare to say officially that it exploded in mid air but it's apparent something drastic and abrupt happened, based on existing available data. So abrupt that there wasn't even time to send out a distress MAYDAY call.
Flt 447 went to the bottom of the atlantic ocean. It can run into thousands of meters deep...
if the fateful mh went down 120-150n.mile eastward of Kota Bharu, the sunda shelf is not more than 70meter deep. But it is now NE Monsoon and the swell can be up to 3m at times...but the met dept has it as sunny with 1-1.5m for next few days.
We hope for positive news...

I seriously doubt it is a mid air explosion because the wing or the tail fins are simply too big a debris to miss. Even if we can't find big chunk of metal, at least we still can find bits of things floating on sea if exploded midair. Also, I find it strange why till now no one can find a single piece of metal despite oil slicks observed.
Well, my guess is that only a whole aircraft can disappear into the water, if it crashed into the sea which can simply make the plane disappear and the oil slicks may indicate an underwater crash. So far aircraft only looking at the surface, therefore, a submarine support is essential.
But for sure, something happened so abruptly that pilot has no time for distress call....
Meanwhile, Singapore Navy has sent a frigate, a missile corvette, a Sikorsky S-70B Naval Helicopter on top of MV Swift Rescue - SSRV (Submarine Support and Rescue Vessel).

"One of the first indicators of what happened will be the size of the debris field. If it is large and spread out over tens of miles, then the plane likely broke apart at a high elevation. That could signal a bomb or a massive airframe failure. If it is a smaller field, the plane probably fell from 35,000 feet intact, breaking up upon contact with the water."A sober, logical article by Yahoo! titled "Why the Malaysian airplane disappeared?" : http://news.yahoo.com/why-malaysia-a...213133681.html

With 20 planes and 40 ships doing the search and rescue operation, I hope someone is coordinating all these efforts so that there are no overlapping actions or missed areas. If there is someone, who should coordinate...China, Malaysia...or..? If there is no coordination, everyone will be doing their own thing. I haven't heard of such a coordinated effort all this while.

For me this looks like a big mess.
* No one noticed that the aircraft was missing during first 6 hours.
* Malaysia Airlines notified after 6 hours that their aircraft went missing after 2 hours, which during the first 5 hours focused the search in the jungle between Vietnam and China (estimated location after 2 hours of flying time).
* 2 or 3 airports in China reported that the aircraft has landed at their airport.
* After 11 hours Vietnam claimed that their radar data showed that the aircraft went down outside of the Vietnam island Tho Chu.
* After 36 hours Malaysia claims that their radar data shows that the aircraft turned around and went down outside the Malaysian coast.
I think it's amazing how bad information is provided by the different authorities. Do they even own a radar or are they just guessing?
FR24 received the last signal about half way between Malaysia and Vietnam and I'm quite sure that the aircraft can be found within 30km from that point.

According to The Aviation Herald's radar data the aircraft was last regularly seen at 17:22Z (01:22L) at position N6.9 E103.6 about half way between Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) at FL350 over the Gulf of Thailand about 260nm northnortheast of Kuala Lumpur and 90nm northeast of Kota Bharu 40 minutes into the flight, followed by anomalies in the radar data of the aircraft over the next minute (the anomalies may be related to the aircraft but could also be caused by the aircraft leaving the range of the receiver).
Aviation sources in China report that radar data suggest a steep and sudden descent of the aircraft, during which the track of the aircraft changed from 024 degrees to 333 degrees. The aircraft was estimated to contact Ho Chi Minh Control Center (Vietnam) at 01:20L, but contact was never established.

It might be related to the Uighur attack in Kunming last week.

"I am still puzzled how come (immigration officers) cannot think: an Italian and Austrian but with Asian facial features,
Asian mother and Italian father? Same goes for Chindian...Indian features with Chinese name. I noticed immigration officers just ask you to put the passport on the scanner and he/she will verify your picture. Isn't it possible for some discrepancies in facial features to be detected then? Or else the passenger may have European features and satisfied all the protocols? After this they will check more closely...but for a while only.
