Can be younger, finish SPM at 18, one year foundation. Enter medical school at 19, its only 5 years (not 6) so graduate by 24. Finish housemanship at 26. As to what constitute a "successful" medical career, I don't know.

From Dr. Google, at the time he quitted, he was attached to the government service. If I were him, it is not a difficult decision to make. Even in the private sector, the first 5 years can be boring. How exciting can a GP life be compared to the entertainment world?. Even Harith Iskandar when he was doing a career talk at Taylor University said it didn't take him long to start charging RM 5,000 per appearance and he got an average of 4-6 per month and that was 4 years ago. And all this for only 25 - 40 minutes show. I was at some of his shows and found out quite a number of times, he repeated some of his jokes. In Malaysia to keep what is in your rice bowl delicious, just crack jokes what is trending and never never touch on the Malay 3Rs - Race, Religion and Royalty.

If I can use $$$ as the measurement of successs. ..

There is one ophthalmologist somewhere near Gasing hill who charge slightly lower than private hospital for cataracts and glaucoma. I once accompanied a relative to his eye clinic, here is my very conservative calculations. .

Average RM3000 per job, 5 jobs per day and 25 working days per month... Minimum monthly income is RM315k.

I am not surprise at all the monthly income is RM500k and above...

For a doctor ... whenever he saves a life ...
For a teacher ... whenever he educates a child ... (different from just scoring in exam)
For a parent ... when he raises a child with integrity ... that contributes positively to society instead of being a burden.

Err..a successful doctor would be one who serves n heals the poor for next to nothing..n charges the rich for a fortune..

"再世华佗"，"妙手回春"，etc., those words were widely used n often seen hanging on the wall of a clinic or medical hall back in the good old days.
That generally means the particular doctor was well respected n appreciated by many..thus perhaps being widely regarded as "a successful doctor".

Oh by the way..did you buddies know that loooong way before, or roughly 1600 years before..when "Western" doctors would use a club to clobber a patient on his or her head to become unconscious..before carrying out surgical operation on the patient..this legendary ancient Chinese doctor by the name of Hua-Tuo had mastered the use of anaestetic medicine on his patients before performing any surgery?

With half a million to one million investment in education, you seriously think getting a job is not a physically or emotionally or psychologically challenge especially in the oversupply of medical students now .... and the foreseeable acute oversupply in the next few years..

How many new doctors or doctors to be I knew from around SJ ? Among my neighbours, 2 doctors and their spouses also doctor, 5 WIP; among my friends’ children, 3 WIP, my daughter’s classmates – 3 studying medicine, a school teacher I knew has 3 daughters and 3 son-in-law all doctors!

One of my friends who wanted all his three children to be doctors is concerned about over supply of doctors. I think there will never be oversupplied of good doctors. In fact, if I need any medical advice in the future, among these doctors, I would probably seek from only 4 of them.

From International Medical University website (www.imu.edu.my), a 2˝ years local + 4˝ years UK MBBS twinning degree programme, just the tuition fees alone comes up to is RM 543,500 + RM 544,313 which is approximately RM 1.1 million. The total cost of living for the 4.5 years in UK is approximately another RM205K (www.studymalaysia.com) thus totaling RM 1,292,813. If the doctor works for 30 years, he needs to earn RM 3,600 per month just to recover back what his father has paid for his medical degree course. This is based on pure mathematical calculation without taking into consideration the financial cost or financial opportunity cost.
