If you know the school has excellent teachers that can teach Form 6 well, than it is a better choice than commercial-driven private colleges.

From what I have heard SMK Seafield has a good set of Form 6 teachers, perhaps, you may want to check them out.

Err Buddies...thanks a lot for sharing your experience n opinions.
After going through them briefly so far in here...
perhaps there would not be what is the right or wrong decision...
considering that decision may be made or experienced under different circumstances...
    for different individuals...at different times.

Since it has been brought up consistently...
lets now Orchi hopes to talk about what would seem to be...
the $$$ financial issues to consider...

Option 1. Form 6 - Should the little Orchi performs reasonably well after 2 years in STPM exams...
n assumes that he would be given the chance to attend local university thereafter...
the $$$ financial support issue would not be of any burden...

IF not...he would most likely be accepted in a private university locally or abroad...
Then the $$$ financial support issue arises...

Option 2. Private college - the quantum of the $$$ financial support issue or the burden...
would more or less...be determined by the type of diploma or degree courses that would be pursued...
n whether or not it could involve sending him to abroad to complete the particular degree course later on...
as well as the location or country of where that may take place at...

So here goes Orchi's next questions...

Isn't there such a thing as PTPTN loan...?
n will that not more or less...ease some of Orchi's financial burden to either one...
    of the above mentioned options...?

Hopes to get additional valuable inputs from all you Buddies out there...

    Best regards
    Orchi.

ptptn will give students loans based on financial background, which is most indicative through their parents' latest income tax form. eg. if parents are earning a decent combined income, not near retirement age or have no other younger children to support, ptptn may reject the application or offer a small amount of loan, which is almost pointless to take up.

with the high number of defaulters not likely to repay their loans anytime soon, ptptn may be stricter in its screening of applications these days.

My friend's daughter took a PTPTN loan of 50K @ 1% interest per annum payable over 20 years. My friend is not poor.

Private Uni fees about 20K per year. Any course, including pre-U but not for medicine or engineering degree course which would cost much more.

Gomen Uni fees about 3K per year.

    So, take your pick.

    Err Buddy Henry...
your friend's daughter would start repayment while she is employed...n earning income.

Heard straight A(s) student gets full government scholarship...
for enrollment to any recognized university...
    Is that true...?

    Best regards
    Orchi.

Ya, she is working now and started repaying the loan.

Close to Uni intake time there'll be many scholarships advertised. Your son can apply and I hope he gets it.

Chinese community in Malaysia put strong emphasis on education over anything. If the above is true for Chinese students, DAP has closed shop. MCA will win big in every constituency with predominantly Chinese voters.

Forget about getting a scholarship (local and abroad) with merit. Apply the gomen scholarship and hope to get it by luck. You feel better if you don’t get it especially when you are equipped with straights A.

Try other avenue. I have a friend, his son study Pre-U in Taylor, Subang Jaya with scholarship from Taylor. No doubt, his SPM result is excellent but the main reason (I think) is a publicity/strategy for Taylor to attract bright students to produce good results in their A level and matriculation program.

I applied study loan from Kuok Foundation and IEM (Institution of Engineer, Malaysia) when I studied in a local uni more than 2 decades ago . I got both of them. My study loan from Kuok Foundation later was changed to study grant after I managed to meet their requirements of honors degree with CPA above 3.5

Orchi, ... if $$ is an issue for UK/Australia tertiary education, then prepare your kid with what NUS expects him to have. My experience (past and present) tell me it is easier to get into NUS with the choice of course than local U..

    Cheers

Sometimes knowing too much could be bad!!! My son wanted to do engineering but I m not in favour of that. If I have not been to Uni, I would hv thought he is good for any courses with his average marks above 80 most of the time(consider Chinese's mark can be as low as 50 - teacher want them to get use to lousy grade fr MOE, also to discourage them to taking the subject because it is bad for the school record). I thought ACCA is a good choice, but many complain life of accountant is boring! My niece who completed her ACCA before 21years old got a job fr 1 of the big 4 bf graduate have just stop working, reason being too boring a life!

Yes, it is true. If students obtain SPM results with 9A+ or above, he/she will automatically get bursary from Ministry of Education to study A-level in private college/Form 6/Matriculation. If he get World TOP universities offer (for courses allowed) after finishing A-level, scholarship will be offered too.

Dear Chang...not sure anymore if this is the appropriate forum section to post such a thread here...
how the time flies past so fast that it would seem to have been perhaps years since last Orchi was actively...
posting before...but now Orchi is lost in having any sense of directions in here.
    Sorry for that...

Of late...Orchi is ever so desperate to seek help hopefully from those many other well experienced parents...
to shed some light n assist Orchi in order to consider the correct choice to make for the eldest of little Orchis...
who would be sitting for the SPM exams beginning next month!

Let Orchi begins by telling a bit about him...
In the recent SPM trial exams...he managed all A(s) on Maths...
    an A for Physics n Chemistry...a B+ for Biology.
    an A for Bahasa Malaysia...
    an A for Sejarah...
    a B for English...
    a C for Moral study..
    an E for Bahasa Cina...

    On co-curricular activity...
He is ranked 2nd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo...he would be taking his 3rd Dan test by this year end...
He has been assisting as a Junior Taekwondo instructor at SJK(c) Chee Wen Primary School...

Well soon after his coming SPM exams...(hopes he would do better)
Orchi would have to make hopefully the correct decision whether to send him to a private college...
or let him continue his Form 6 education at his current secondary school...nearby.

Appreciates to get the advise from experienced parent members of Usj.com.my...

    Best regards
    Orchi.
Err buddies...O is merely thinking after being nearly 3 years since O posted the above in the forum..
O should post an update about the eldest of little Orchi's educational progress in here...

That year end 2013 SPM result, he did miss his straight As target after having managed a B on Bahasa Cina.
The next year, he made his own choice to study at INTI, n he fared really well on his further study of the Science subjects.

He is now furthering his medical studies at IMU of his own choice...with consistently good grades so far...
(well quite frankly O thinks perhaps at the time he was afraid of being home sick n all should he be sent further away from home)

For O..that choice of his educational path...may or may not be the very best for him..
but at the least..he gets the opportunity to do his best...

Oh by the way..he did pass his 3rd Dan test.
Now..O's butt gets his kicking instead...

    Err..hey Doc..longtime no see!

O told him earlier NOT to worry about finding n getting a job.
Just concentrate, focus on his studies n do his best..

Then when the time comes just do like what so many of the old Chinese medical practitioners have done in the past.

He could on daily basis start to perform his medical practices in a stall on a wooden table n chair, as well as having a few rows of wooden stools n some basic diagnostic apparatus n tools of his trade whilst his certification is framed up n hanged on a wall..

He could then attempt to treat his patients by writing out his remedies on a prescription paper in exchange for angpows or token of appreciation from his patients..
His patients would then have a choice to obtain the prescribed medicines from any pharmacy nearby.

O would foresee nothing wrong with that..

In fact where O is right now..there are plenty of medical practitioners operating from their own private homes treating long queue of patients..
    in similar ways.

O patronized one of them recently to get a prescribed medicine for a stubborn sore throat.

Cost O only about 15 ringgit

Err...come to think of it again...maybe O could say it in another way.

Many moons ago...O recalls having mentioned before an example about a certain well known medical practitioner by the name of Ch***g sifu.

NOT sure if he is still around or not...but he used to operate from a stall inside a traditional medicine shop at PJ SEA Part right opposite the market.
NOT too long later he rented a shoplot a few shops away from its original operation.
Other than that NOT much has changed.

Still he was treating about 80 or 90 patients daily from 0800 until the queue numbered cards kept repeating itself...
    patients after patients...

On each of his patients...he would spent upto 10 minutes of his treatment practices..n at the end of the session...
he was paid 30 to 40 ringgits.

It is common knowledge that O's mathematics is poor...but roughly estimating...
he was perhaps being paid in CASH at the rate of about 3000 ringgit daily...averagely.
As far back as O would recall seeing him on the previous occasions...O had not noticed
whether he had any sort of qualification paper being framed up or hung on the wall...
(O might have been wrong about it though)

So anyway back to the matter of...getting a job n do allow O for asking...
what REALLY is going on in the minds of so many folks...?

Is the task of getting a job really been so physically or emotionally or psychologically been so difficult for many?
Is it for the sake of self ego...status...or pride?
Is it NOT really for earning a living...or money?

As some would say...there is more than one way to skin a cat...
O would always agree to that...
