    Tyre Lifespan

    Hi all sifus,

    Generally how long a tyre should last? Do we measure by years, or by mileage?

    My Dunlop 215/60R16, Alloy have been in use for 3 yrs and about 50k KM, and looks like it's about time to change - is it reasonable?

    A tyre shop told me if we rajin do alignment after every 10k, some tyres can last even up to 80k or above - is he bluffing?

    It is reported here that:

    "215/60R16 Potenza - RM250 in SUBANG JAYA BRANCH"

    That's the best price for that model that I know, who knows which shops in USJ (or elsewhere) that offer this price?

    I am not so good with tyre prices but the advice I was given is that IDEALLY, one should consider changing the tyres based on:

    1) How many years - 2-3 years due to hardening of the rubber compound, increasing its brittleness properties hence probability of blowouts ... I am no material science expert but having used rubber material esp rubber bands exposed to the sun and high pressure , you know what I mean !!

    2) 30-40,000 km - check for wear and tear ...

    Whichever of the above comes first ....

    Seriously, if driving at high speed and a tyre blowout ... can be DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING ... so is your life or family members worth more than RM1000 (for 4 tyres) every 2-3 years ?

    I am not selling tyres but I have suffering a blowout before while travelling on KL-Seremban at 90kph .... trust me, I am so happy to be alive and be able to still typing this to you ...

    Nowadays alot of accident happened mainly is because choosing wrong tyre... I am really speechless while the workshop I went recommended me a lousy tyre..of course also my fault because I know ntg about tyre The tyre I get when I break during heavy rain is not very efficient. I think is quite dangerous.
    Now , I don mind to pay more to get better performance tyre. Any of you drive Hyundai Sonata using 18" rim? Can recommend me any good workshop? and also brand of good tyre.

    Yup, good tyres is important for cars.. actually i think we should choose good branded tyres like Yokohama advanDB,
    GoodYear Eagle EfficientGrip,
    Bridgestone Tyre FireStone,
    Stamfordtyres Falken or Toyo Tyres，
    Continental ContiMaxContact™ MC and so on..

    those companies usually invest alot in quality maintenance and research and development.. so their quality of products can be trusted.
    We should understand our car well as a driver and should know what type of tyres suit our vehicle,
    for example like what is the different functionality of hard and soft tyres?

    As far as I am concerned, being a thrifty layman, I wouldn't go for the high-priced branded tyres. I am sure for normal city driving (with the odd inter-city highway trip), there really is no need for the flashy tyres.

    My choice for specific brands is for quieter rides. Some of the standard issue tyres are probably noisy. Other than that, I am quite sure they are safe for normal usage. We are not running at hundreds of Km/hr on F1 races.

    As for timing to change tyres, my gauge is the wear marker found in the thread grooves of the tyre - once it has worn down to that marker level, it has reached the point for a tyre change. Unless you have kept the car immobile for long periods, I don't think the tyres will deteriorate. But if you do have to keep your car immobile for like about a year, you either have it jacked up on metal supports of have the tyre pressures pumped extra high.

    I consider tyre blowouts an act of God or real shitty bad luck. The blowouts we see on lorries are due to the use of poor quality rethreads.... I don't think they are allowed to sell rethreads here for cars nowadays

    But they do sell them esp to TAXIS ... saw the workshops having done so many times ...

    So now we not only get fleeced (speaking in a general sense) by cab drivers but they are also putting our lives in danger by going for retread tyres!

    It helps to rotate the tyre to get an even usage. Otherwise some section may have a lot of rubber while some already botak. I would not dare to use it.

    i have driven my accord 2.0 for more than 3 years and still driving lah. but until now right, i have never changed any of my tires yet and they seem in good conditions lah. went to workshop to checkup the car, the promoter keep on asking me to change new tires cause of my tires already in 3 years old, will be dangerous if i keep on driving.. but i was thinking... is this promoter wanted to earn money or really hope i am safe all the while?

    lol, be positive abit..they might want to earn extra but it relates to your safety too...you shouldnt ignore it. you should always make sure our car tyres in good condition...if not accident might happen..
    If you worry, i think this workshop they quite honest..

    jz now i saw michelin fb sout out about the 'Fill Up With Air' (FUWA) at putrajaya tu,
    thinking to go there shopping and at the same time got professional check for my tyre.
    at least safer to go back to hometown during raya time.

    If you wanted to find a tyre that give you a safety feature..I would recommend to try Michelin Primacy PS3..this is new launch product but the technology of this tyre have is the thing that you never experience before. you can have the total comfort while driving because you can have best handling by using this tyre.Why not??

    How long a tyre last can be subjective... My 2 BF Goodrich front tyres on my car have done 70,000km in 4 years and still good... Good for at least another 10,000km. FYI, this BF Goodrich is sister company of Michelin... I have driven this tyres on Sepang track and up down Penang JB... Good value for money performance tyres... But only downside is that it's not so quiet.. But that's not a checkbox I tick when shopping for tyres.

    I'm also using Michelin XM2 green tyres for the rear.. after 30,000km of mainly long distance weekly KL-JB trips. The tyre look like it didn't wear out much... It's marketed as fuel saving tyres with low rolling resistance, quiet, good road holding.. It wasn't bluffing...
    The tyres feel a little jittery in the initial 500km, but after running in, it is good... It's slightly more expensive but for what it does, it's worth the money.

    There is a wear indicator on the tyre in between the grooves.. When the tyre wear down to that, then it's time to change... For me, as I'm more in tune with cars, I tend to fully utilise my tyres... hehe.. But I made sure the front tyres has more than sufficient grip for braking and turning where I want it to go, especially in the wet...

    I also change my tyres in pairs and not all 4 at the same time.

    Remember that the 4 tyres are the only things in contact with the road... Don't skim on tyres.. I have seen ppl drive BMW/Merc with big rims but use cheap tyres. Really Aiyoh...
