Unfortunately for me, I am DISQUALIFIED by rule no. 16 : Not stayed in UK and Europe during 1980 to 1996.

I was happily chomping on cow-burgers in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt from 1984 till 1999 !! McD is the cheapest food for a student !!

How come until today Malaysian health system still CANNOT check on people like me huh ?

I am a regular blood donor. I would like to share with your organization to consider one of the rulings recently imposed by NUH (National University Hospital) Singapore that is donors should not take any forms of herbal extract (such as, ginseng, gingko, grape seeds extract and etc) 3 days before the donation.

I think this is sensible ruling, in case some patients may have complication due to these herbal extracts. Please consider. Thank you.

I took Ginseng and I donated recently to University hospital.

In fact, the person who received my blood will feel more energetic and recover faster.

Ginseng is not a drug, it is only after long term use, then you can feel the effect.

Caffeine is even more harmful than Ginseng as you can feel the effect in a short while ie. half hour.

What's with this strange rule ? As long as you are tested that you don't have any disease it should be alright to donate.

Well…...what I was told is that whatever herbal extracts taken by you may be good for you as a healthy person but not necessary good for patients especially those on medications. Moreover, we do not know who will receive the blood.

So, to avoid any complication (which nobody want it to happen neither you too), a general ruling as such was imposed by NUH.

NUH is not being scientific. As long as it is herbal and not a drug it is safe to donate.

I can understand in the case of Gingko because it has the same drug like effect as warfarin.

But Ginseng has no drug effect and slow acting, taking coffee before blood donation is worse , and yet they didn't ban those taking coffee. Coffee contains caffeine which has drug like effect and fast acting.

Whenever I take coffee, I get headache, fast heart beat, stimulation of nervous system etc after one hour of drinking.

According to a friend of mine who used to work in MoH, Malaysia has no such capability to test for blood donation the last time I asked and there are not that many Malaysians staying/residing in Europe during that time. It is easier and cheaper to just reject us.

I have to go elsewhere to get myself tested and the best will be back to UK.

i have donated some 30+times before Nat Blood Bank decided to be strict on the residing in UK thingy...I have since refrain from donating as I dont wanna have the conscience that my B+blood could be 'tainted' and the recipient could turn out madder than me!

Know that this ruling is seldom applied by these adhoc collection centres esp. in shopping complexes and office bldgs...But it good to see that it is applicable here.

p./s I also think #13 is unjust and should be better substituted with "No having any alcohol/spirit/whisky/beer/brandy within past 48hrs"

Hi, that's fresh to me.. i didn't know about that. but i believe the docs will do the job will discuss with the doctor about this matter .. becuz it's my first time hearing things like that hehe

I'm not 18 yet but if I do turn 18 and if I weight less than 45kgs(taking into account my height and muscle weight) I still can't give blood? :O Also does donating affect your menstrual cycle or make you tired?

1. The UK rule is by WHO due to the mad cow disease during that period f time. According to PDN, they are not sure of the incubation period.
2. You can donate if you are 17, with parents' consent. There's a consent form for 17 year olds. 18 year olds can donate blood.
3. Less than 45kg - probably a possible risk to donor.
4. It does not affect your menstrual cycle at all but those having menstruation are not allowed to donate blood. Donors may experience tiredness esp first timers. Remember to take the iron supplements they provide.

You are correct..it is the fear of the mad cow disease. The disease is caused by a prion (a folded protein molecule) and the disease is known to have a long incubation period, perhaps up to 8 years. Hence someone who is infected would be symptomless for that period of time and thus could transmit it in the blood for example..
