Petunias

I bought 4 petunia plants recently to hang in front of the house. I googled and read extensively on how to maintain petunias. There seems to be 2 schools of thoughts about pinching the flowers. Now, you know that petunia flowers do not drop off when they die so it has to be pinched off. Question is, do you pinch off the flowers only? Or do you pinch the stalk that holds the flowers too? In youtube and others, these 2 methods are suggested. What do you think?

Petunia flowers drop. Venuspop will be able to give you expert advice. My experience is just to enjoy the beauty of these flowers for at least 2 months. Then throw them away and get new ones. This will save you time and energy. Even if you try to propagate them, they won't grow to such beautiful blooms. This is just from my personal experience.

So, I was told, very difficult to grow but if it gives me beauty for RM4 a pot (after minus Baba pot) it is worth it. Even buying from the florists cannot be cheaper or hiring a gardener. Anyway I read extensively on the internet and youtube about it. I decided to trim it drastically as advised so let us see how it response.

No, it was RM8 per pot but it came with the Baba pot plus the hangers so I figure that the Baba pot plus the hanger will cost RM4. I like the quality of Baba pots and tools.

I already trimmed them botak. No flowers left. I am waiting for it to grow back. If not, I learn my lessons. Anyway petunias need lots of water, sun, and fertilisers so I am giving all 3 to them.

And no, petunia flowers do not drop. That is the peculiar thing about it. It has to be pinched off so that new flowers will bloom.

And yes, I intent to buy them regularly but not so many. Maybe 6 pots each time if I am not successful in re-potting them.

I can swear by my grandmother's grave that all my petunia flowers dropped and I had to sweep them all everyday! But never mind.

Why you botak them when there were still bearing beautiful flowers? RM8 is still very cheap, esp KL standard. I don't think you need to add anymore fertilizer. The nursery has already done the job for you for the rest of the life of these plants!

Whatever, just enjoy the beauty of petunias. Whatever may happens, que sera sera, whatever will be will be.

You are right. They do drop eventually but if you want more flowers, do not wait for them to drop. Pinch them off.
