Tomoe Japanese restaurant (SS15) - Hidden gem !!

Today, I discovered another hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant - TOMOE (next to the others Jyu-raku, Yamada, Rakuzen etc ... ) Check out: www.tomoe.com.my. It is "part" of the Subang Valley Hotel, I think ....

We wanted to eat at our usual Japanese restaurant (Jyu) but it was jam-packed so we decided to try out Tomoe ... it is not new per say, have been around for years .... the last time I tried it was 6 years ago, and it was just so-so ....

So, frustrated by all the long queues at the other restaurant, we walked oer to give Tomoe a "new" chance ... well, it was a GREAT SURPRISE ... new menu, new layout, etc .... (probably NEW CHEF and KITCHEN STAFF) ...

Price-wise ... COMPETITIVE (around Jyu's price range )
Food-wise ... LET JUST SAY, if Jyu is packed out, I have not hesistation to walk the extra 10 steps
(FREE SALAD ... help yourself !!)

AMBIENCE .... THE BEST AMONG THE WHOLE STREET !!!!!!!!! You can ENJOY your meal in a no-rush, calm, relaxing and not cramp environment ... BRILLIANT !!!!

As usual, the Nippon ryori is tailored for locals, still far from authentic, and I hate to hear English music/song in a Japanese restaurant.

However, it is an ideal choice for lunch because there are more car parks available (front and side) because upstairs is a hotel…

You can park at the covered car park FOC if you dine at Tomoe... with valet parking summore !!

What do you expect, Leonard ?? You want them to play the pop songs from Nippon SYT group !!

I dislike English songs in Japenese restaurant .... it is the same reason I will get mad when I hear Western music in a good Chinese restaurant..


ps. If you go to Singapore and dine in Lei Garden (利苑) in Orchard road. Try to ask them an experience when a Chinaman customer insit them to change the music during a dinner, not too long ago..

tailored for locals? maybe but them jap sararyman cram the restaurant every time i go there for dinner.... don't like to go there that much coz the sararymen are allowed to smoke in there...

Well, if you go to any of these jap food shops for dinner – tomoe, ryuko, rakuzen, nippon tei, etc …... there are always jam-packed .

This pseudo jap food shop is ok for fast lunch only (when you eat in a hurry or you want to have a swap of your favorite currymee !)... Don't spend precious money there if you expect a quiet, authetic nippon dinner...

Cigarette smoke from nippon smokers ??
Try the small Jap food shop same row with the 7-eleven/domino pizza ( opposite the emergency unit of SJMC)..

You may need to bring an oxygen tank before you go in !!


ps. Some may wonder where the heck so many nippon folks stay in SJ ?? Well, the condo further in after Holiday Villa hotel – summer & spring villa, boulevard SJ are their traditional pigeon holes in SJ !!

Last time I went they have Japanese food in the Chinese reataurant – The Inn of Four Season.

Nippon ryori in a Chinese restaurant... what a bizarre food offer !!

Went to the OTHER side of SS15 for japanese food a few hours ago.... (SS15/8B to be exact.... ) and expected family and I was going to enjoy the same decent Teriyaki Chicken that we used to enjoy previously.... . Keyword: "expected"

Since the kids was insistent on Teriyaki ~ we ordered but were we in for a 'surprise' ...

1. ....the chicken teriyaki and the salmon was SALTY as *****
2. ....suspected generous amounts of MSG was also used as we got helluva thirsty, after the meal.
3. ....the pickle accompanying the meal... 1 miserable yellow slice each... . (now if you go to a Korean restaurant, you can drown in all the pickle you want!!)
4. ....the salmon portion ... (still think someone swiped HALF a portion of salmon, heck - compared with the portion in Japanese rest in Jaya Grocers in Empire and you know what I mean)
5. .... for a bowl of miso & a bowl of rice ~ have to ADD RM9 .... the prices in the menu was ala carte... so you'd end up paying RM39.00++ (by the way, am pretty sure the rice was LOCAL and not sticky Japanese rice!!)

End of the day - damage was RM158.00++ for 2 Teriyaki Chicken, 1 Salmon and 1 Bowl of Pork Rice (Donburi).... I ALMOST CHOKED but had to put a brave face as not to disappoint the kids and spoil the evening.

Anyway (end of the day) the call is yours as to eat at this place.... for me, its definitely a NO FLY ZONE from now on... the food (and price) is much much much better at Sushi Zamai or the Japanese rest in Jaya Grocers Empire!

We went to this Jap place called Nihonkai in Kota Kemuning. I asked them what kind of chicken is Nihon kai but the waitress just grimmed and said she does not know.

Anyway, it was packed, being a Saturday night, with one or two parties waiting. We had simple meals like fried seafood noodles, a big plate of sushi which was quite good especially the huge prawn, and a bowl of rice with prawn tempura, plus a plate of rolls (fu chuk). Damage was RM68 for the 3 of us. Free refill for our tea. Service was good. Ambiance was unexciting.

Hmmm ... being a Nabeyaki Udon and sushi kaki myself, I really cannot comment on the teriyaki chicken value, quality and pricing
