It depends on one MAJOR factor:

1) Are you the lazy type ? If not, then the normal sediment filter cartdrige (outdoor type) should suffice but you need to physically change them once a week or two - cheapest option - cost around RM100 per year. (this is my option) Furthermore, I prefer this option as when it gets DIRTY, I can SEE it !!!

2) Rocket type - RM2,000+ (top of the range BACFREE - RM3-4K - I know coz I have checked !! ) ... (warranty around 5 years) - I made a comparsion against no. 1, it will take about 15 years (inflation adjusted) for you to recoup assuming NO REPAIR and DAMAGES over that duration ... suitable for lazy type, just turn a valve once a week for back-wash and can reuse the dirty water for gardening .... to remove accumulated sediments.

BOTTOMLINE - you still have to do SOMETHING ONCE A WEEK OR TWO .... either physically change the filter cartdrige or back-wash ....

FORGET about all those over-scare stories about chlorine levels etc .... you need them in the water to kill the bugs. The ppm (parts per million) is safe for consumption. What you DON'T NEED are the DIRT and RUST PARTICULATES which can be fully removed by normal 5 microns and below filter ....

I like the Bacfree one, trusted performance.
Am using now, convenient to get, 2 offices in Subang
Service= not bad
they give you a full flush out on first installation
downside - pretty costly

I find the normal sediment filter type useless (use it before). The moment you change it, it's all brown straight away. Not only that, have gotten my white clothes turn brown a couple of times and I gave up on that filter.

Now I use Euroflex. It's convenient and useful. Comes with a timer that does the backwash automatically. So no need to "do something each week" There are occassions when there is no water, and when the sudden flow comes in... it comes together with tons of dirt and sediment, then I just have to press a button to do a manual backwash.

Hahaha ... OF COURSE, that goes to show how filthy SYBAS piping and distribution system is ... the thing with normal filter cartridge is that the dirt will accummulate on the outer layer first and then slowly works its way to the core ... so you need to know when the core gets dirty, then time to change ... from my experience, if I buy good, compact 5 microns ones, it takes approximately 10-12 days before the core gets brown, so to be safe, I change every 7 days .... part of my weekend chore lor ....

Value for money? It's hard to say as every 2 years or so you'll have to change the sand, carbon, etc & it'll cost about RM300-400!

You can try some other brand such as Waterco ... Cost around RM 1500 with installation ... I know this because mine is this brand ... not too bad quality ....Warranty : 5 years from the manufacturer ...

Don't trust them if the retailer is giving the warranty

I having a Waterco filter, perhaps the 1st generation, removed from my old house and DIY install to current home. Biggest model, but it works nicely.
Its a superb product, only thing is the valve does wear out after some years and leak. Internal spares are not exactly available here and expected to replace the whole complete valve assembly. Thats a few hundred a pop depending on the mounting flange. Mine happen to be the more pricy one, sigh. Lucky can periodic DIY dismantle and check its integrity, service it to some extent.
Other than that, maintenance and periodic change of sand. It serves the purpose and cleaner water to your tank and pipes. NOTE! this doesn't prevent your GI pipes from rusting, internal corrosion and eventual blockage. It just removes major sediment from the incoming water, thats all.
