Another (new) Broadband Telco for Klang Valley

Just picked up the news for the emergence of a new player in the 1Gbps broadband telco in Malaysia providing high-speed internet services. They plan to start in 1st June ... only a few days away.

The telco company is Vasseti Datatech Bhd who have signed an agreement with a boutique Internet Service Provider (ISP) GL Broadband (GLBB) from Japan
Another source says that Vasseti will be offering 5 Mbps, 10 Mbps, 20 Mbps, and 50 Mbps internet services for residential and business customers.

That is promising news. Hopefully it will be cheaper and runs on a better carrier since it runs on better fibre-optic technology (Metro-E technology, whatever that is).

I am glad I did not jump onto the other broadband offers like UniFi, Yes or P1 yet.

Anyone in the broadband industry can shed some light?

I hope they will offer unlimited access packages. Speed is not high on my list of requirements....just a miserly 1 Mbps is more than enough for me (currently still on 512kps screamyx ). Reliability and reasonable cost (~RM100 per month) is a priority.

When I read the Bernama Press Release [your link] and saw their stated investment in laying optic cables [500M as claimed]....and that 'Italian' sounding name....I thought I had read about this long back....

Yes, they have been around for a while, though not sure if they have actually started offering the service from their earlier announcement in the Star on Saturday August 21, 2010, or was delayed and just about too.

A good BB provider will definitely need 'deep pockets' to compete with the Telcos, and these guys portray that they have it and can play as this report in Borneo Post which appeared on [ November 10, 2011] shows their portfolio supposedly to be wide......

Almost everyday, I see people trying to promote Unify to me. When I exclaimed that it is too expensive to those 'just graduated' young kids, they say 'it is not expensive'.

Look at the broadband packages of USA, Singapore, Korea etc., on dollar to dollar they are much, much cheaper compared to their salary.

Our broadband streamxy etc are TOO expensive. I am still using 384kps at home, worst than yours.

I believe Maxis fibre lines are being installed for business premises and high-rise residential properties like apartments and condominiums. Correct me if I am wrong but landed properties only have Telekom lines which exclude Maxis broadband services

Thats what I thought too, so I ignored the package they were offering, TILL I received an sms from them and decided to check it out.

After posting here, I decided to do some research online [should have done that earlier]

Here's what's happening....

Maxis IS providing Fibre BB to Homes too....actually, they are riding on the Unifi backbone...so you actually get virtually the same thing, with a bit of their extras....not forgetting their special price now. RM118 for 10Mbps!

That's 31 bucks less than Unifi at 5Mbps[RM81 if you have 10Mbps on Unifi].....as for the package, everything is FREE, installation, modem, phone.....the difference is in the phone charges.

For Unifi....free to TM fixed lines, 0.10c [not sure what blocks charged] across all networks, no special rates for IDD [correct me if wrong]

For Maxis Fibre BB....free to Maxis fixed lines, Free 600 mins to Maxis Mobile and Free 200 mins IDD to select countries [Aust. UK, China, India, S'pore is there].....Other Networks:

Calls to non-Maxis mobiles @RM0.09/min.
Calls to non-Maxis fixed lines @RM0.05/min local & RM0.09/min nationwide.
Calls are charged in 20 second blocks.

Now looking at this Package....a lot depends on your situation.....if you are already a Maxis subscriber, most of your friends and family on Maxis and have Family overseas, than this can amount to considerable savings.....not forgetting the 81 bucks you save on your BB!!

Also to note....contract is 2 years, if service lousy, you are 's@#$#@#d'...no escape clause, got to pay the 2 years....seems Unifi has a escape clause now, RM500....wasn't there when I signed up, but I've finished my 2 years with them, boy how time flies

Another thing....since the calls will be over VOIP, wonder how the quality?

Kuma, thanks for the details. This is good. I am looking for a package deal which includes my phone and this Maxis deal seems good. Right now, I am using Digi for phone and Unifi for house. I am looking for something to put everything under one good company to save money but yet have fast speed.

Yes, this looks good....the whole package is ideal for me too as not only do I get a faster speed at a cheaper price, the FOC calls package is better as we do make a considerable amount of overseas calls plus a good number of family and friends are on Maxis....one rarely makes calls to landlines these days, so I figure I should make a sizeable saving switching providers.

However, there seems to have been some teething issues with the roll out of Maxis Fibre....lots of 'grumblings' on their Forum and Low Yat, mainly about teething connectivity, the Router that seems to overheat...complains of latency with a high ping rate, and so on. I hope they sort out these issues soon as once you have it installed, no turning back for 2 years.

Note that if you are on Unifi, then the installation should be quite fast as this runs on the their backbone....I would assume, it would only involve a switch of the Router [ seems that Unifi team comes with the Maxis team for installation]....if you haven't completed your 2 years with Unifi, then there's a RM500 cancellation fee....BUT if you decide that you don't like the Maxis service once installed, then expect to pay RM118XBalance of 24 month contract

At the end of the day, the savings on calls and all the extras are irrelevant....whats important is a good fast and stable internet connection....pointless accepting anything less so as to save on phone calls [something you shouldn't overly indulge in the 1st place]

In the spur of the excitement, I submitted my application, the guy told me they would call and installation might take a month as a lot of applicants....I'm not too sure on this...looks like more of a liaison issue btw the 2 teams to come together for installation.......anyways, he said I can cancel before that, so I watching the Forums for feedback like a hawk....will keep you posted

Anyway, the guy said it'll take about 7 days to install. Wonder if they're lying through their teeth!

If you look up the Threads on Low Yat Forum....the average I'm seeing is about 3 weeks from signup to installation.

"2 year contract with no proven track record.......scary lah."....Ya! ....but then again, I signed up with Unifi when they were still in beta testing...and they too had a 2 year contract then, with no escape clause....the RM500 to terminate was added recently

Some of the arguments being offered on the other Forums is that since TM holds the backbone, its best to be with them....but really, there isn't very much in terms numbers for feedback for the service as much of the rollout started only recently.

Actually, not too worried about whether Maxis can maintain quality or not. Just have this distinct discomfort with long contracts, especially when the local ISP competition is starting to get heated up now. 1 year is okay lah. On the other hand, 2 years isn't a lifetime......

During the 6 months of testing was FOC, once they launch in July 2010, had to pay lor!

Yep! concern about the Thomson router too....and the problem is, this is not a case where can go to LowYat and just buy a better router to replace

I'm going to tell them to take their time for installation....while I wait and see

6 months FOC for beta testing is more like it.

Yup, worries about that router is my main grouse now. The modem is okay, it is leased and Maxis covers the warranty for as long as the contract. But the Thomson router has only a one year warranty, and the VOIP service is dependent on it. If it conks out after year 1 of the 2 year contract, we have to pay another RM250 for a new one. Looks like we cannot choose alternative unless we don't want to use the phone service. Maxis should give a 2 year warranty in line with the contract lah.

Did any of you notice line 6 of the T&C form `You accept and acknowledge that Maxis reserves the right to leverage onto your residential WiFi modem to cater to the Maxis Hotspot service which may be accessible by the general public who are subscribed to the service.' Your house can be turned into a public hotspot! Great, we may have strangers circling our residence uploading/downloading who knows what......

The other thing I'm still unclear about is whether each user gets a unique dynamic IP or is it shared like 3G/4G.
