    Second time I heard about retrenchment in May.

    Fresh graduate are demanding high pay that doesn't justify, but are necessary to meet cost of living. A mismatch of productivity and cost of living.

    The government is wrong thinking that by jet up the cost of living-petrol, sugar, housing, to pressure the increase of income/salary - high income society - is the way to 2020.

    Without strong fundamental and real productivity, it is nothing but bubble in the making.

    High income by 2020 ?

    More like high inflation and high unemployment.

    Jibby will probably tell you not to worry because he is an economist from Nottingham University haha!

    Jibby will probably tell you high income is achievable... he just launched minimum wage policy and he doesn't even need to launch productivity programs simultaneously, its magical, other countries also cannot do this magic!

    What is appening is European countries are at a standstill, imports are declining. Similiarly, India and China too have a bad month of April and for that matter Sinapore too, all experienced marginal drop in production index.

    So their demands for imports also turun mah... their inventory level builds up and so Bolehland sold less lor... Thus after 2-3 months these manufacturers feel the heat and starts retreching...

    But Jibby won't tell you the real reason, he will just tell you not to wolli!
    He who knows, knows he knows, he is wise;
    He who not knows, not knows he knows not, he is a fool;
    He who knows, not knows he knows, he is asleep, wake him up!

    Malaysia: 10 reasons why it cannot be business as usual

    Quote:
    "The Malaysian economy has entered a critical phase. Integrated into the global trading system as part of an export-led economy and driven by foreign direct investment, the economy today is feeling the effects of a global slowdown.

    Compounding the problem are other structural weaknesses in the BN government’s economic model that tell us that it simply cannot be business as usual for much longer."

    Resource depletion and environmental degradation as seen from the lower gas output, and we have lost the leadeship in rubber and palm oil industries. Most of all, we have lost the competitive age as in superior communication and education skills.

    Globalisation is a fact of life. If we are unwilling or unable to change, then we would be end up like Greece. Look at China during the 1800's onwards till 1900's. From a country where it was way ahead advance of other countries with its civilisation, power and glory, it was plundered later by its own officials due to corruptions and foreign interventions.

    If we can embrace globalisation like China or Singapore, we would be better off. If not, we be fried like blurred sotong and served in the nutty sambal sauce. Not only the products are outsourced from China but many factories and plantations ventures have moved to neighbouring countries namely Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia in recent years.

    If we dont, in times to come, we might be exporting our women to be the maids cleaning up houses and washing laundry.

    Think the olde mean ex Chef is cooking some stories? Think again as back in the 50's and 60's where Phillipines was the most advance country in Asean region. We dont see Filipina maids working here or coming here illegally, right?

    Either comes from irresponsiblle leaderships or we are not responsive enough to face globalisation with urgency. Don't play, play

    That is exactly my point - I can see shipments of coal to China slowing down for last 2 months... sure it is summer and heating requirements is less in hot weather but requirements of coal in power plants and manufacyuring plants have come down tremendously... by at least 15% coz I have 4 requests to either delay the shipment departures or carry forward to June departures....

    I believe the slowdown in Europe is hitting China exports badly...

    For the fools who still thinks that we are the chosen ones, let them dream on. What makes them think that we are so blessed that nothing that happens outside will affect us.

    I would think that Malaysia will get through this round of slowdown with lower growth, still respectable compared to our neighbours.
    Most employers in the service sector wouldn't mind spending money on retraining and absorb the workers retrenched from the manufacturing industries.

    FYI, I still find it extremely tough to fill in vacancies in my companies. It takes at least 3 months to fill an executive vacancy.
    No doubt wealth has been created but the gap between the rich and poor has increased multiple fold.

    To give the lower & middle class a better deal, we need a long term overhaul of our economy to make us more competitive and increase wages at the bottom rung.

    He is correct! It should take about that long, for the world to come out of the coming depression.....and considering that this part of Asia will [this time around] be the first to show signs of growth once when the turn around begins....we should be amongst the 1st with jobs.....of course all this will depend on our ability to fix the structural weakness within
