A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped outside the Mont Kiara International School this morning, sparking a massive buzz on Malaysian social networking sites.

According to eyewitnesses, Nayati Shamelin Moodliar, who is of Dutch nationality, was on his way to the School when he was abducted by two dark-skinned men in a black Proton Persona with the registration number WNH 1356 at around 7.40am. However, the police have confirmed that the registration number of the vehicle is fake.

The school has confirmed the news of the abduction, saying in a statement: "School was in lock-down due to the abduction of a Grade 7 student Nayati Moodliar prior to the start of the school day. All other students are safe and accounted for. Abducted child has not been located. Police have informed that Amber Alert has been issued."

A Facebook page has been set up appealing for help, and anyone who has any information about Nayati's whereabouts are advised to call 019-233 3065/012-689 5377.

Sadly, when the poster was first created, i think the expat community really put faith that procedures like the Amber Alert works the same in MY as it does in, say, the States. Basically, authorities would immediately closed down all ports of call, interrupt all tv and radio broacasting with regular highlights of abduction, running teletext (??) at the bottom of the screen, all digital advertising board on highways to be switched to that of picture of child and info. Ours is codenamed the Nurlin Alert. Granted that Nayati is not and won't be the last to go missing here, the expat community is surely getting frustrated at the way it is handled in the first 24 hours.

That is a relief. Everything has turned out fine. I suppose for the kidnappers too? Wonder how much they were paid. Since there is no report of the cops doing their job (of securing the kid's release), the parents must have dug into their pockets.

Now the authorities need to step up and apprehend the criminals who abducted the child. I understand from radio news today that a 'substantial' sum was paid to the kidnappers for Nayati's release. The sad thing is we might just see a rise in such kidnappings for ransom money being copy cat crime.

If only they are as conscientious in crime prevention as they are wollaping people walking on the streets then our streets would be a much safer place to be.
