Hong Kong / Shenzhen / Macau / Zhuhai

If you are going to HongKong/Shenzhen/Macau/Zhuhai, what are the places you don't want to miss out (or do want to give it a miss)?

Hong Kong / Shenzhen / Macau / Zhuhai

What are the 'must visit' (sightseeing & goodfood) places?
Anything interesting to visit in Zhuhai and Shenzhen, or places to avoid going?
Am planning to go for a short 6-day whirlwind self-organised tour, four of us in a group.
Appreciate your valuable inputs and advice, including any warnings of places to avoid too.
You can assume that we know next to nothing about these places.

When I go on tour, I dun wanna to miss a thing. It is risky though as once nearly get robbed by the locals in outback Quilin village near Southern China! We were in a group of 8 but they were about 20 of them. Luckily I smelt something fishy and I signalled my friends to run across the street to be back to the hotel.

Nevertheless, been to the street of Wongkok, Hong Kong where the infamous town of Gangsta and to Macau which is among the most dangerous place where you could lose your pants - at the casinos.

I have had been walking either foolishly or hungrily for adventures to even worse cities i.e. Bronx, NY to Newark. NJ or North Philly, PA all by myself but I got mugged right at my door step at South Philly where it is considered as safe neighbourhood. How ironic!

IMHO, when you go to see the world - you shouldnt avoid the fast and furious location. my 1st trip to USA , I avoided to see Sunset Bolevard, California at night with my firends as we were told by the concierge it was not safe and I came back regretting. EVer since then, I start taking risk to see more places whenevr I go. Otherwise, I couldnt cook the China or Bronx stories to you.

BTW, you think it is safe at usj or Subangjaya? Tell you what - Wifey and customer get bungled once at the restroom during 7.30pm dinner time ( with 18 customers at that time. ), customer get beaten once by mat rempits at the outside patio, and 99 supermarket next door got robbed with parang in the broad daylights!

Whatever it is, try the local delicacy in the hawkers stalls while in Macau or Hong Kong as in Wong KoK.

Thanks Zing for sharing, if I were still in my 20s, I wudn't mind venturing alone which I had done before. I assume WongKok is the equiv to Petaling Street of KL? Heard HK Central is smthing like d Bkt Bintang of KL? Any clues to what these local 'must try' deli ?

On accom: What's d recommendation for reasonably economical stay for 4persons - rental serviced apartment? Is it safe? Heard hotels are expensive in HK esp. HK Central, is that true?

Just make sure you go to the "right" fishball stalls. where there is the famous kind and the other infamous kind. Just dont be caught with your pants down with the infamous one\ which is found almost very nooks and corners of Wanchai.

BTW, the shopping haven should be Shenzen which is just an hour from Hong Kong. In fact, my Hong Kong Kakis from MY2nd home program often goes there for shopping especially the high quality imitation from Chanel to Coach. Sound very Cheap in price too!

Thanks firefly, for sharing your friends postings & all the recommendations !
Since it'll be in early May (early-mid summer), guess no need for warm clothings, less luggage to carry makes moving around much easier.

The pix are great in giving some sort of reference to directional bearings - am sure will be very helpful too.
Wow! like what dey say, "so much food, so little stomach!"

Apart from apparel/clothings/leather goods/food and furniture/sightseeing/scenary/artifacts/museum, what wud you want to buy that you cannot find locally here - something value for money, something usable and reliably useful where everyone and anyone can use/appreciate for home/apartment/vehicle?

When I visited Taiwan, I saw a gadget that you can plant in your garden, take snapshots every x minutes, and then you can review it at your leisure. Good if you want to review who visited your home while you were away. What can I get in Shenzen/Zhuhai? Anything interesting?

What a coincidence! Am also going on a 5 day trip to HK sometime in October. This includes a 1 full day trip to Macau. We are thinking of going on a full day Macau Highlights tour which costs M$98 per pax. Is this advisable or should we just do our own walkabouts in Macau?

Welcome to this thread! However, we planning to be there in May...
What does the rm98 cover? Can share?
Was just thinking whether walking around Macau wud suffice, then travel to cover Zhuhai on a day trip since it's very near to Macau. No need to stay in Zhuhai.

Heard there's some shopping complexes on the border of HK/Shenzhen - my other member-in-grp might surely be interested. What abt other interesting places to visit in HK/Shenzhen?? Shud spend more time in HK or Shenzhen for sightseeing?
