Can I connect a normal headset to a smartphone(for testing) or is it incompatible?

If you refering to those normal 3.5mm earphone jack, I think there is no harm trying, the worst thing is lousy sound or no sound it won't spoil your phone or earphone.

Last time I try insert my previous Samsung Galaxy S earphone to my new Galaxy Note, it come out breaking sound, seem like not compatible. Not yeat try with normal 3.5mm earphone yet.

After reply your post, I go and plug in a normal headphone to my Galaxy Note 3.5mm phone jack, its play perfectly!
So, I think there is no problem to plug in normal earphone to phone 3.5mm earphone jack.
