Searching the Forum

As some of you may know, the SEARCH application found on the top bar of the Forum pages here does not work.

There is a simple way to use Google to search by including the words in the search as below -

site:www.usj.com.my

So if you were searching for curry mee, you would type the search as

curry mee site:www.usj.com.my

As you can guess, you can make searches in other websites as well so long as you type in the site address of the specific website.

However, I have simplified this further for you.....
I have found a javascript that helps you to search for any topics or keywords in the USJ Forum. This is found on our front page of this website. You do not need to type in the site address as shown above ... just type in the words you want to search (I have already set the javascript to include the site address)

Agree that this really so much better than the one provided on the forum menu bar.

As for the threads you pulled out, guess you are using some sort of forum admin tools you have access to am I right?

Google search can be quite powerful if the right combination of keywords are used. But still it cannot beat your single scoop query.

You are correct about picking the right keywords ... after all, they are the keys and that unlock the right searches

As for me finding out the past info for you, I am just adding the words "site: www.usj.com.my" (ignore the quote marks if you type it).

As I had said in the 1st post of this thread, I have put the search function in the front page of our website (in the left column)....This one box search I put in the front page also uses that "site:" addition to the search script.

As you know, if we search Google, the key words will find anything but not necessarily from the site like our Forum. Hence the very powerful facility available in Google is the "site:" function because it will limit the search to the site that you name....of course, you must provide the website address after the word "site:"

Now go try it out for any site you like and see how Google does the magic.

I got the gist of it. Wondering if you cud reprogram the 'Search' at the Forum Menu bar to force it to work via Google instead of the almosts useless current search codes.. Any chance?

Sorry, the 'Search' function in the Forum menu bar cannot be changed. I have tried my best but there are no admin facility to change that. I am also unable to reverse engineer the Forum software

Hence I put up the search in the USJ website front page (in the left gray column) - you will need to go there to do your search.

Something we will have to live with, something is better than nothing I guess.. BTW if I may ask, what was the yearly maintenance cost for the vBulletin s/w, or was it a 1-time purchase w/o maintenance? If we were to upgrade to the latest version of vBulletin how much will it cost now? And does that include any right to customise? Do you still hold the original s/w binaries or codes?

Jeff bought the application and it has no subscription costs. I suppose we can get free updates but this application is already many versions old and the only way to get the latest version is a new purchase. Jeff had said he will buy the new version but we have not gotten anything since his last suggestion a few months back...I guess he is too busy.

Apart from some incompatibility issues with the open source database (which give rise to funny error messages), the old vbulletin app we are using now is still working well. I manage to work around most of the issues in administration by using alternative solutions.
