Gear Box Oil Treatment

I am having a small problem with my gb. When I move it to reverse or D, it will not respond for a few seconds and even then, rather slowly. And in the morning, it takes a long time to move up to the OD. Usually it does that within a km but now it takes about 4 km.

I am thinking of adding a gb oil addictive. Any recommendations?

When was the last time the gb oil was changed? you may want to do that first coz somehow I never think any of these oil treatment thingy work

A few months ago but it did not solve the problem. My mechanic said to change the valve body but I am trying a cheaper option.

Years ago, one of my cars also had gear problem. I spent abt $2K in a specialist Gear work-shop but the problem came back after 4 wks.

Then I went to an ordinary workshop and that man said, change the wires & was done. No more problem Cost 250/- only

Yes, first thing to check is any external sensor, dirt can cause a bad connection, stones can damage wiring and the worst culprit of all is a high pressure wash under the car.
Sensors can also be hidden behind protective plates so look carefully.

What is your car? Sometimes it's cheaper in the long run to change the gearbox as repairs can be expensive.
Last time i had a problem with a BMW gearbox the dealer said never change gearbox oil or you will have nothing but problems.
So i changed the oil, what a huge mistake.

Mine was an automatic but from 3rd Gear, it could jumped back to 1st Gear.

The specialist at the Gear Box workshop took the gear box to pieces and put them all back, took abt 4 wks.

As for the oil, I left this to an authorised workshop and had it serviced according to the book.

Another mechanic confirmed that the gb is losing inside pressure and not worth repairing it. So, I am planning to sell it before it gets worse. Should have another 12 months easily.

Sometimes it is due to incorrect fluid being used, like a myvi recommends Dexron III but some ppl choose to put in toyota T-IV instead. Might want to hunt for recon/halfcut gbox instead if not economical to fix

did the mechanic say what is causing it to lose pressure and how much does it really cost to fix that problem?

when you sell it, a test drive would reveal the problem and the buyer will definitely either squeeze you on price or just walk away coz everybody knows it's not cheap to fix a gb.

A gb cost RM1.5K Already checked it out. And yes he did explain it but I do not think I understand it completely. An overhaul will costs more than RM1K. And I am planning to sell it cheaper than what I plan earlier.

Mine was a BMW 5 series auto gb, only i found out as it was a dumbed down export US spec BMW it was a Chevrolet truck gb
The parts to repair were US$24, just plastic ball bearings that had worn causing low pressure which made the gears slip.

I tried to buy the plastic ball bearings from BMW but was told cannot sell to Joe Public.
I called Chevrolet to buy the ball bearings but they insisted on knowing the serial number and then said "Sorry you have to talk to BMW".

Both BMW and Chevrolet said do not change transmission fluid.

Cost of a genuine BMW German built gearbox was stated as US$6000 including shipping.
I was dumb enough to buy another BMW, but now i say never again.
