This is an EXPERIMENTAL thread for parents in assisting each other in home tuitioning their children in BAHASA MALAYSIA (or BAHASA MELAYU).

As the learning of a language is FLUID, there are no fixed rules or ideas as to how this thread will turn out We can share and exchange ideas, materials, recommendations, methodologies, exercises, past year papers etc ... on how we can improve the learning of BM for the kids.

Let me start by saying that I am not advocating to replace school lessons or private tuitions BUT to provide a forum and support group for parents who are considering extra home-tuitioning for their children.

In addition, I am also not a school teacher. I am just another parent who can read and write

Yes, it is a good reference point to start although I have to warn parents, it is dry and boring to read

Let me kick-start the Q&A by asking something simple :

Is "Internet" - a name am or nama khas in BM?

What I mean is that do you spell it as internet (nama am) or Internet (nama khas - uppercase "I") ?

I asked as my understanding is that it is a nama khas - "I" but Lick Hung BM teachers seem to think that it is spelt with "i", and my son has been losing marks as a result but I continue to insist for him to write it with "I" and I am prepared to take the "loss"

I honestly do not know.
I think as long as it is not spelt with capital in English, then likewise in BM, no ?
Even so, in English it is sometimes capital I, sometimes lowercase.

BAHASA MALAYSIA Books

After much "experimenting" and trying this and that, I have narrowed down the type of workbooks/guidebooks that I used to teach BM to my son.

Note: Most of the BM books that I use are for Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) for LONG TERM development.

When I use SJKC version books, they are targeted just for Lick Hung school exams.

The BM level for SK is deeper and much more comprehensive than SJKC. SK BM is like one year ahead of SJKC BM. I am targetting for my son to have strong solid BM within the next 2 years.


PEMAHAMAN

I have finally settled down to those little brown exercise books type of workbooks for PEMAHAMAN. They are not only more effective but cheaper and relevant than bigger more expensive colourful workbooks.

The one I like best is the one:
1) "Buku Rampaian Pemahaman" - Cemerlang Publications (SK version)

PENULISAN

I have also narrowed down to:

1) "Buku Rampaian Penulisan" - Cemerlang (SK version)
2) "Proficient Cemerlang Penulisan" - Cemerlang (SJKC version)
3) "Lathian Penulisan Bahasa Malaysia" - Potensi (SJKC version)

TATBAHASA/SISTEM BAHASA

I have narrowed down to:

1) "Buku Rampaian Sustem Bahasa" - Cemerlang (SK version)
2) "Latihan Pengukuhan Topikal Tatabahasa" - Siswasiswi Publishing (SK version)


COMBINED BOOKS (All 3 sections above combined into 1 book)

I have narrowed down to:

1) "Buku Rampaian Sistem Bahasa" - Cemerlang (SK version)
2) "Buku Latihan Bahasa Malaysia" (brown exercise book type) - Sasbadi (SK version)
3) "Smart Practice Bahasa Malaysia SJK" - Oxford Fajar (SJKC Version)


Where to buy ?

Well, I got all of them from CASAMAC (SS19) between Sri Melur and Sports Toto.

(Note: I have no financial interest whatsoever in this bookshop except for the discount card - it is one of my favourite bookshop (for school revision books) together with BIG Bookstore (Taipan) for its comprehensive range)

Methodology - currymee's way

This one is slightly tricky due to deeper level of difficulty in SK BM vocabulary and explanation required.

So, I READ with my son first before he tries the questions.

I rotate DAILY - 1st day - Pemahaman, 2nd day - Penulisan, 3rd day - Tatabahasa, 4 day - Combined and then repeat again.

It roughly takes 30 minutes as well - so combine with English 30 mins - so, it is AN HOUR per day for both subjects .... the secret is to do it DAILY !!

So, try and set some REGULAR time aside daily for the children and yourself IF you want to try home-tuition. Apart from learning, you will find that your bonding with the children also increases !!

Although my children do not use the Sekolah Kebangsaan workbooks, I found that immediate revision of the daily school work to be effective for them so far.

After that, about a week or two before the exams, they just go through the extra SJKC workbooks (mainly Tunas Pelangi and EPH - bought from Popular) and school exercises again.

Hahhaha .... I can assure you that I am not.

However, I have the benefit of having a lot discussions with the KL SJKC teachers during the recent school holidays that some of their ideas and thinking may have rub off on me.

Like English, one of the best ways to learn BM is to read lots of BM books.

I use workbooks a lot to help my son improve his BM - he has to do a couple of pages daily.

I was told that one of the best series of BM workbooks is the one by SASBADI for Sekolah Kebangsaan, but I have not check them out yet.
