Oh! Satay Celup! Let's dip everyone!

I had satay celup for the first time in Malacca over the weekend. Well, it's not exactly something I'd recommend to anyone. In fact, I won't be going again anytime soon, if at all! It isn't like it doesn't taste good but from the hygiene aspect, it's a total nightmare. You're supposed to dip sticks of meat and whatever into a hot pot of peanut sauce placed in the middle of the table in a steamboat fashion kind of way. Once they are cooked you pull them out and eat away. Halfway through, you need more sauce...hey, no problem, you dip the stick right back in! Now imagine this. The customers before you are doing the same thing. Over and over again. Aunties aunties, uncles uncles, grandmas, grandpas, the maids...EVERYONE is there. All dipping into the very SAME POT !!

    Bon Appétit!

I thought the protocol is to dip it only once into the satay sauce. Didnt know about redipping the uneaten part.

I was from Malacca, I think I can say I know this satay celup things more than many people as I stay in a shop house around the area when I was a small boy....

The satay celup was not so famous and successful decades ago. It was in the humble beginning of a stall-like business.

I REALLY failed to understand people can PATIENTLY QUEUE to eat the celups. Maybe the sliver from different folks in the pot is the secret that lure everyone to go there and repeatedly to patron the shop…..

You meant saliva, I'm sure. Hehe. I suggested to my friend that they should provide us bowls for the sauce hence chances are that patrons' saliva won't get into the sauce but he said it was the saliva that made things so delicious!!

I had my share of satay celup in 1991 when I came to Malacca for a weekend at the Malacca Viilage Resort from Singapore, where I was working then, never again!

And someone just started a satay celup joint here at the Pulau Tikus Hawker Centre... no way man...

Hehehe. Exactly. The shocking discovery that every other customer before you at the table you're seated was dipping into the SAME pot of sauce and chances are, they were re-dipping half-eaten bits into the pot for more sauce is simply quite revolting. By the way, the sauce is never changed at least as far as the day goes. The waiter would come around and top it up only! All the "liew" is probably lying at the bottom...but no worries, every 15 minutes a waiter comes around to give the pot a real good stir as he adds fresh sauce into the pot! .roflmao.

Not really shocking to many people judging from the long queue every time I drive thru the narrow road in front of the shop....

Unbelievable, unbelievable... sliver oops should be saliva is regarded as the best sauce for those folks.....

One shop in the town centre had a queue going onto the road!!

Saliva seems to be the ingredient for success in a satay celup business!D
