Ahhh.. I almost forgot about this type of sate celup lah... I remember walking to my sister's school IJC in Banda Hilir from SFI and eating the sate celup from the lady in push cart beside the school. Yeah can eat one stick also.... Those were the days lah...........

Where I grew up there was no satay celup. Only the always to-die-for white kopi, cheecheongfun, tong sui, chendol with pulut and chicken & bean sprouts noodles. I can't really complain at all, can I?

Yup, now kariparps cost about two bucks and most do not live up to expectations. How lah indeed.

The Homi curry puff isn't bad, to be sure, but it is just that after having a couple, I feel like throwing up. I haven't a clue why this is so. It happens each time. With other curry puffs like for instance those sold by Old Chang Kee, I'm good. Delicious, yummy and I can down three in a row.

The fun of it all is gone .....

As a kid, remember going to Cathay to watch a show and then popping to the back to whack satay celup as I watch the Malacca River flow-by

Bet it was tastier [and cheaper] back then.

But my fav, was the 1-man cart parked in the afternoons just off the Padang opposite the Fort and old M'cca Club.....nine chap, broke students can just take 1 kangkong and bread - got timun too

I miss the area very much (the padang and the morning sea breeze) in front of the two missionary schools..

I cycled from my house and jogged there..This is one of my teenage memory…

Although I did not study in these missionary schools, I played hockey with friends inside these schools.. The hockey stick is still with me and kept in the car I am driving now. I guess it is still handy if I need to practise my hockey skills when it is necessary..

Nowadays, I “hate” driving and walking in my hometown due to the abundance of low level tourists flooding into this tiny Unesco city.. And talking about Malacca food now, almost all the food sucks as it is catered for these tourists..

If you are not too choosy... Harper (near the river jetty and in front of the old Chung Khiaw Bank (an affiliate of OCBC in the old days) is a place not bad for a western dinner and a few glasses of wine. Last time I went there was about a year ago. The chef worked in Italy before and possess the same wavelength with me on food and drinks. Hope he is still there.

Fyi, for someone to know where is the old Chung Khiaw Bank .. one MUST have stayed in Malacca in the 70s and 80s before… )

Old world charm of Malacca and its colonial past is GONE!...period! What is left are mere remnants, copies, emulation, trying to relive the past glory, ruins and the only bit of over glorified stone fortress left for posterity. Wanna see real stone fort or fortresses?,..goto INDIA lah!
I still remember my relatives place along Jalan Banda Hilir (now Jalan Banda Hilir) and just behind was the shoreline right behind the house..now where Melaka Raya stand and thrive.
I can't hardly believe when passed by my granduncle's home at Limbongan, where there was a esplanade and the straits sea just across the road, now there's 2-3 storey building sitting there on reclaimed land...how awful!..the house is a mere shadow of its former grandeur. Time have changed..can't turn the clock back. Gone!..all gone!

Old world charm has mostly been replaced by new world wonderment. I find both as fascinating.

Old world charm never mind..tolerable to most i reckon..but for me..old world charm IS entirely a unique and timeless. NW wonders are so artificial to me..so plastic, so thick and tainted with pretense.
Its just me...anyone like to enjoy either in any state..go ahead..no qualms from me. I'll continue to cook and enjoy some Baba dishes I learnt from my dear late aunty and from my own home kitchen..sendiri experiment and cook it out till perfection! YES, practice makes perfect as with any other skill. Save cost eating out and enriching profiteers too.

Yup!..Penang is still fortunate having "living traditions or originals" being carried on. Maybe will last for this generation only. Malacca got good food with originality!..but you really have to search them out. Don't ask me where..one man's meat is another man's poison.

I don't think this is original. Been commercialized and hyped up of late when Malacca tourism boomed!. That shop near the river bridge was a ramshack 12 years ago when J Double O 1 and me ate there..The place looked like NOTHING then, tell me how its "original" Malacca food?..I know not! Just like Jonker Walk?...what WALK?,.. it was just another blardi narrow street in Malacca just like Heeren St, Harmony Street, Jalan Bunga Raya, Jalan Bukit Cina..Jalan whatever!..

Jonker Walk

Speaking of Jonker Street, a friend has insisted that 'Jonker' is pronounced as 'Yong-ker' but I'm not convinced it's true. I'm sticking with 'Jonker'.

Either it was unknown to me during my young days in Malacca or I've never found its of a highly sought after "chicken rice" within Malacca town. I know it became famous and those established shops capitalized on M'cca tourism that its of high reputation now since over 10 years ago. The shop you see now is seriously renovated for tourist attraction. If you saw the same place 12 years ago..I don't think anything would have attracted you to go in UNLESS you're insisting on some chicken rice meal.
Just like Line Clear in Penang Road at Georgetown. It was just "another" NK haunt with nothing to shout about in the 90's. Now people LINE UP to eat, blogged about so much, foodies still talking about it "itu NK must try lah, best lah, etc!) there..apa lah!..
Jonker is a Dutch name. Yes, its yongker..so is Heeren as in Heeren street... yes..Dutch influenced Malacca.

I think I get it now. It's all a smart marketing ploy, isn't it? Since no one was laying claim to chicken rice ball being their town's specialty, Malacca's hawkers quickly called it their creation, created the necessary hype and hey presto! A signature Malacca dish was born!! That's a con job, if I ever tasted one.
