    D ~~~ OK Here's an example. I am not good at long explanations so I say "Good Luck" to you. Hope you can understand.

    Let's say that the given word is CRACK
    1. TRICK is acceptable. ~~~ 1st (C) and 3rd (A) letter was changed to T and I respectively. The 2nd, 4th and 5th letter (R,C,K) remains unchanged. Their position in the word also remains unchanged. Words are not scrambled.
    2. STARK is not acceptable ~~~ In this case, The two C of CRACK was changed to S and T. the remaining letters carried forward were R, A, K of which A and K are the 3rd and 5th letter respectively. ~~~ S replaces C. T replaces C but its position in the word changed from 4th to 2nd. (i.e. scrambled) R which was the 2nd letter now becomes the 4th (i.e. scrambled)

    The position of the letters in the word cannot change. In other words, you only replace two letters.

    PUNTIES to PUNTERS
    [PUNT and S] remains unchanged. They retained their original position in the word. 5th and 6th letter (IE) replaced by (ER) In other words, I replaced by E and then E replaced by R.

    BUNNERS to BUNNIES

    So you can use back 'E' in the first one and 'E' in the 2nd one.

    Ahhhhh ~~~ Now I see where you're confused. You thought the E in the first case is scrambled into E in the second case and hence the confusion.

    No, don't relate them. Just think of them this way.

    E (first) ====> I (second)
    R (first) ====> E (second)

    They are replaced independently.
