Arrifin to raise 'green issue' at next council meeting

BEING a politician loyal to his party, Arrifin Osman would not let the matter rest.

He will continue to bring up the 'green issue' during the (Subang Jaya Municipal) council's full board meeting at the end of the month, he told The Malay Mail.

Despite coming under criticism from many quarters for dwelling on such a minor issue, Arrifin said he would not give up.

"I have read the comments about my remark. This (is) not about trees or grass. This is about the sensitivity of the council which is a Government body.

"Many disagreed with me, but what I said was my personal view as a Barisan Nasional politician. I still feel that the council should change the colour of the logo," he said.

"I suggest that the current logo be replaced with the old logo," he added.

Arrifin, who is also the secretary of UMNO Seri kembangan division, admitted that changing the logos in the municipality would be costly.

Asked if he would contribute to topping up the cost of changing the logos, he said: "Why should I? When the council decided to change the old logo, they did not consult the councillors,"

Arrifin said he could not raise the matter two years ago as he was not a councillor then.

Stop being petty, councillors urged

"IT's petty, so just drop it!" This is the advice the Selangor Government has for those questioning the colour of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) logo.

"There are more pressing issues that should be given priority instead of something as petty as the colour of a logo. Besides, the colour is not (the same as) the PAS colour," said State executive councillor for local authority, squatters, housing and environment, Datuk Ahmad Mokhtar Dahalan.

He was commenting on the controversy over the colour of the council logo which was raised by re-appointed MPSJ councillor Arrifin Osman.

During the full board meeting late last month, Arrifin was quoted as saying that he will not wear the MPSJ logo because it features green, and green represents the colour of PAS.

He demanded that the council change the logo immediately.

Ahmad Mokhtar reminded local councillors that their priority was their responsibility to their people.

He said there are more pressing issues such as the problem of dengue fever, squatters, hawkers, video games and other social problems.

Following the hoo-ha about the background colour of the logo, Ahmad Mokhtar said he had approached MPSJ president Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

"He (Ahmad Fuad) showed me the logo and I think there is nothing wrong with the colour. It is not the PAS colour as the green used in our logo is a light green, which represents unity, cleanliness and beauty of the Subang Jaya municipality," he added.

Ahmad Mokhtar said there was no need to change the two-year-old logo.

They suggest a few options:

To pacify Arrifin Osman's grouses that the Council changed the logo without consulting the councillors:
- Sack the council president Ahmad Fuad for misconduct

To satisfy Ariffin's loyalty to his party:
- Award him a contract (such as changing the logo)


But to get to the root of the problem, the higer authority which pre-approved the final list of councillors - angels or monkeys alike - should be ultimately held responsible for endorsing a petty-champion like Ariffin.

In this case, Mokhtar Dahalan is the state Exco who manages local councillors.

His s butt should be kicked. Or, ifyou wish, throw him out in the next general election. He hails from DUN Kelana Jaya constituency.

You don't spite your face by cutting off your nose. You also don't throw away the baby with the bath water. Likewise, you don't kick out Dato Mokthar just because of one silly guy like Arrifin. Let us call a spade a spade. So who wants to bet with me that this guy will only last one term?

The other day I was shopping for a second hand brain for my brain transplant and was introduced to a shop in Shah Alam. There, I saw so many brains up for offer. I saw in one special corner were 3 jars of brains priced at RM 50,000, RM 5,000 and RM 5. So I asked the neuro surgeon in attendance why there is such a big difference in their prices. He pointed out the one priced at RM 5 belongs to a very famous scientist who won a Nobel prize in biotechnology. The RM 5,000 was that of a typical inconsiderate Malaysian driver. But when I asked whose brain could it be that fetches up to RM 50,000, he said he couldn't remember very clearly whose was it but he said it could either be a menteri besar or a municipal councillor. When I argue that neither of them is worth that much, he replied "But sir, in the second hand market, goods or products that are hardly used usually fetch the highest price."

I beg to differ.

This, to me, is not an issue we can trivialise in puns.

It is one about accountability as entrusted onto people who are supposed to represent our interests as ratepayers.

Right now, the system doesn't not cater for accountability.

The Exco, the YDP and the councillors just crow. They squander, they walk away with 'murders' because the system makes them untouchables. They are made not to be answerable to you poor blokes whose houses will get sealed if you failed to pay cukai pintu.

Bet? I can only bet 15 years down the road, our kids will be posting in a web forum somewhere, talking exactly about what their fathers are talking right here - if the fathers did nothing with the power vested in their hands.

Then, the father's brains may be paraded at RM50,000 - not one but satu lungguk.

And we get the politicians we deserve, and fault no one.

in parliament they suspend mps who offend insist on going agst the chair. this ejection mechanism should also exist in local council meetings. mpsj pres should exclude subversive elements from their line up and recommend for a replacement asap. this would be in tandem with the desire of the population at large, not just opposition members but also respected members of one tax guzzler's own party.

or does it take a petition to (ahem, almost similar quality brained dentist) remove a local councillor? unless we start issuing walking certs to those who cannot perform or who insist on wasting time and public money, the reality and predicament jo pointed out will inevitably continue for generations to come.

I Hate to say this Mr. Councillor Arifin, but one day, when you are disenchanted with UMNO leadership, make sure you do not run to PAS for shelter! For a simple reason, you will raise the same issue again, but this time, to want to change the logo back to green!
