Russia gets 2012 World Cup, Qatar 2022

One World Cup in the freezer followed by the oven - very clever I was hoping for Spain-Portugal and Ozzie, at least then can go and enjoy holidays, now change of plans - both countries also I am not interested to visit.

Ahhhhh .... the Al-Thani family - everything BOLEH family .

I don't know how the players could play 45 minutes each way. I could barely breathe the moment I stepped out of the Doha airport in the summer . Moscow in the summer is no comparison, I would think.

Here are the facts extracted from FIFA's website on the voting for the World Cups for your info...

There are 24 members on the Executive committee and a secretary-general, as listed below:-

    2. Snr. Vice President - Julio Grondona - Argentina

    VPs.
    3. Issa Hayatou - Cameroon
    4. Chung Mong Joon- Korea Republic
    5. Jack Warner - Trinidad and Tobago
    6. Ángel María Villar Llona- Spain
    7. Michel Platini - France

    9. Geoff Thompson - England

    Members
    10. Michel D'Hooghe -Belgium
    11. Ricardo Terra Teixeira - Brazil
    12. Mohamed bin Hammam - Qatar
    13. Senes Erzik - Turkey
    14. Chuck Blazer - USA
    15. Worawi Makudi -Thailand
    16. Nicolás Leoz - Paraguay

    20. Jacques Anouma - Côte d'Ivoire
    21. Franz Beckenbauer - Germany
    22. Rafael Salguero - Guatemala
    23. Hany Abo Rida - Egypt
    24. Vitaly Mutko - Russia

    Secretary General
    Jérôme Valcke - France

This is the voting process of elimination till a winner is declared by absolute majority :-

    2018 FIFA World Cup

Round 1: England 2 votes, Netherlands/Belgium 4 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 9 votes (as no absolute majority was reached, the candidate with least amount of votes, England, was eliminated)

Round 2: Netherlands/Belgium 2 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 13 votes (Russia obtained an absolute majority)

    2022 FIFA World Cup

Round 1: Australia 1 vote, Japan 3 votes, Korea Republic 4 votes, Qatar 11 votes, USA 3 votes (Australia eliminated)

Round 2: Japan 2 votes, Korea Republic 5 votes, Qatar 10 votes and USA 5 votes (Japan eliminated)

Round 3: Korea Republic 5 votes, Qatar 11 votes, USA 6 votes (Korea Republic eliminated)

Round 4: Qatar 14 votes and USA 8 votes (Qatar obtained an absolute majority)

You be the judge on the buzz in the sports media after the decisions were made public.....

It is interesting to try to read the minds of the committee on where and how soccer is heading and evolving. To me, it is a question of going with the old school (sticking with traditonal hosts, perceived economic/political stability/infrastructure etc) or venturing into unknown territories. It brings back concerns most of the soccer fraternity has when South Africa was the host nation recently. And see the results. Sometimes, aspirations are hard to reconcile at that moment in history, but innovations and risk-taking are some requisites to dream the impossible....

I think it was a tough call on the need to popularise soccer around the world and a traditional view on realising returns on investment objectives. Let's hope the game is not tainted nor World Cup soccer interest is not diminished by all these...

    Cheers!
