Have you all forgotten the 3-bins (green, yellow and was it purple?) provided by Alam Flora at all petrol stations? That was what it was meant for but no one made use of it. That effort is exactly the same thing proposed here by Jennylim ... and she said she wasn't sure if it had already been implemented by MPSJ.

I have also tried my hand at composting in my garden and I found that a lot of leaves gave a little bit of garden compost but it works, nonetheless. That reminds me ... got to dig out the article in TheStar this week which shows us how to compost.

No need la ... just ensure the compost is dry (not drowned by rainwater) and aerated (to prevent smelly anaerobic decomposition). Buying a bin defeats the purpose because of the expenditure. I did mine in an unused flower pot with regular turning of the composting material. Keep it cheap and simple.

Organic wastes go to the usual trash. These 3 bins were designated for recyclables as suggested in this thread.

Aiyaaa.... BS, you are a long term resident in USJ, don't tell me you did not know of this project by Alam Flora? If any of you residents did not, then what else can I say? Nobody's been paying attention to your own neighbourhood ... so how to help you guys?

Ya lor... I admit I'm somewhat backwards in that department. Never mind lah, I'd continue disposing that kind of waste as I've done, eventhough its quite a distance from my place.

If any of them is caught red-handed, summons will be issued, should they fail to pay the summons on time, hauled to court. The public should also play a part to report instances like this to the police/MPSJ hotline, to assist the enforcement officers in taking action.

As for the clean-up, we all play a part in this, numerous gotong-royongs have been organized. Do join your neighborhood RA (If you don't know who/where it is, ask me), first step if playing your role...

Set a regulation where all 'rubbish' from each and every household must be divided into five categories: Organic, metal, plastic, paper, real rubbish.

Alam flora to collect only the real rubbish on current normal scheduled days.

The 3R categories to be collected by another contractor on a different day. This contractor is to be selected through tendering process, the one selected would be the one who pays MPSJ the highest tender price to collect the 3r items. The money collected from contractor can then be used for the community. The tendering should be done by area, if the tender price for USJ 11 is RM5000/month then this money should only be used for USJ 11 community.

My children's former school have a beautiful school environment and they were all done and maintained using money collected through recycling project.

In New York, the residents are required to separate the 'rubbish' by categories, those who failed to do that would get a ticket.
No, MPSJ has no such rule yet. A pilot project is underway in USJ5 to separate "real rubbish" and recyclables. The real rubbish is collected 3 times a week, by Alam Flora, the recyclables is collected every saturday, also by Alam Flora. However, the proceeds are being channeled to charity, as preferred by USJ5 resident associations.

I hope to expand this to composting soon, once we can work out logistics. If any other area would like to volunteer to be park to this pilot project, please contact me.

One problem is that they are placed behind the buildings or in places where people are not going to go.

Place the bins near the air pump, and people will make use of it.

how about Alam Flora, have they done a good job of promoting the concept of 'recycling for free' instead of the 'recycling for charity' and 'recycling for money' that we are more used to?

Dropping off used clothes & items for charity is not recycling. It is donation for re-sale and re-use.

Methinks people are confused because the messages they get are not clear and because there is no government or community leadership pushing a single message about recycling & composting.

    Cllr Rajiv,

All the street lamps along Persiaran Tujuan (between USJ4/1A and USJ3) are OUT this evening (17/01/2010) and there are a few especially near the USJ3 park are blown (dark for last 4 days or so) - called TNB and they said it is MPSJ street lamps

If that is so, how do we know whether TNB or MPSJ own which street lamps ?
Everyday is a good day for GOOD FOOD and a GOOD LAUGH
