    Unhappy co-curriculum kills (dragon boat)

Feel too saddened for those involved in the dragon boat training tragedy.

Shall we stop overemphasizing co-curriculum in our national policy?

No need to stop overephasizing co-curriculum, the problem is the people in charge to complacent never bother to take the neccesarry safety measures. Everyone must have a proper working safety jacket, boats must be inspected beforehand, must have qualified people on board and also another boat by the side with lifeguards on board incase something happens. If this is to much to handle then just stick to the ground.

not to mention that the activities should be done in a safe place...dragon boat racing in an area with numerous boats and junks, grounded fishing equipment and relatively unpredictable currents...I would have refused to get on the boat.

We really need that strong safety culture and it should start in our schools.

You can even get killed or knocked down by a car, when walking down the street, so can you ban walking altogether?

Its like burning the whole house to kill a mosquito...
That's OK Chang, I am quiet aware of your biased moderation too... And I dont need to slip in any last few words

I think another boat going along the side would have prevented the accident.

That's the problem here. Nobody gives a damn about taking (extra) precautions. Naka, this would have been the right thing to do.

You are not going to ban Dragon Race but you can make it safer for all.

Yes, just take the extra precautions and things should be alright.

if sueing will provide remedy for the loss, then ok; however, I'm afraid OFTEN it doesn't. We are talking about loss of lives here

Training has always been held at the reservoir site at Telok Bahang... at the end of Batu Ferringhi. But with too many teams practising including those from Australia and Hong Kong, the organisers decided to allow training to be conducted at two other venues i.e. off Weld Quay / Macallum Ghaut area and another near the Jelutong Coastal Expressway beachfront. Both were not the same as the calm protected waters of the dam / reservoirs. There were safety measures taken including all trainees were in life jackets etc but unfortunately when the dragon boat were flipped over by the tug boat, many of the trainees were caught below the boat. The dragon boat is not a light boat - its heavy and it could have struck many trainees when flipped over by the tug boat.

Accidents happen and there is an air of sadness and regret here in Penang. Easy for some you bystanders to just say sue the blardy this and sue the blardy that but just in case you miss the news, the principal of Chung Ling has put his head on the chopping block i.e. he has agreed to be sacked if investigations find that safety measures for the students have been neglected. Thats ACCOUNTABILITY for you!

Let the grief calm over and let the investigations proceed. It was an accident nobody wanted to happen. It is a shock to many of us especially to the many foreign teams now based here for training. Everyone is really sad no point making it worse by being a hero and shout nonsense from the sidelines, only make you look like more a fool.

Yes, I am trying to stay calm too.

And the principal should not just cry but to quit because he failed to do his duty, that is to provide adequate protection for the children and teachers.

Easy for you to say for the principal to quit, tell me what wrong has the principal done for you to ask for his scalp? You have not lost a single child and you are so very unforgiving. The parents who have lost their kids here have already said they forgive the principal and yet bystanders like youb are asking for his neck on the block? Did you ask for the neck of Tan Sri Muhyiddin when the bridge collapsed and children's lives went down the river? No? Why not? Why not you walk up to Tan Sri Muhyiddin and say I think you should resign!

The trainees were all geared in life jackets and there were several experienced seniors and teachers in the group. The tug boat flipped the dragon boat, what can anybody do to help when the boat was flipped over suddenly?
