I would prefer to practice what the Germans do. Then will be level playing field for all. It will be a test between how well a teacher teach and how well the students learn. Our exam is more of.... WHO THE PARENT OF THE KID IS. If the parent hard working and source for past year exam papers.. send to good tuition centres.. sure the kid will EXCEL!.. Minus the parent help.... and if the kid still get every paper above 90%... that is real intelligence. I tried with my daughter who is now 12 yrs old. With my help 80% above.. without mummy.. can drop to 60%... So, now with my boy who is 7 yrs old.. I am using the method... SELF STUDY... so, he will not turn out to be NO MUMMY.. NO STUDY...
Yup, you are right and I believe many parents would like to have more social time for themselves...
Kid's academic should only between the students and school ..
I have no doubt that the western approach in elementary studies is the correct one, overall..
Unfortunately, this approach is unlikely to happen here and unlikely to happen in many eastern societies due to different social and cultural emphasis, and the demographic breakdown of population.
Yes definately u will get there by STD 5. Especially for STD 6 it is TOTALLY LICK HUNG & CHILD. My daughter come home at 4.30pm.. she is totally drain out... and then one stack of homework. Mummy really relax at STD 6. No need parent intervention at all. My job is just make sure she gets proper rest and nutrition... So, my own revision education also stop at Std 5 syllabus...
Latest Update on New Block & SIngle-Session
I managed to have lunch with some of the contractors building the new block last Friday
I asked them about the work etc ... the reply - ALL DONE ALREADY, only small work which they can "kautim" very fast, so it is up to the HM to decide on the starting date.
Well, August starts in 2 days time, so I guess it will now be in September
Over the weekend, I met one of the Lick Hung teachers and chit-chat (as usual) and she said they still don't know when it will officially start but everything is ready to go on their part .... She added that it will be this year as the HM is firm on starting in 2012.

YES...!!! u have to believe it... ask any STD 6 student.. they can really transform the SUPER LAZY to hard working student
and it will happen in STANDARD 6!!!!!!..... My daughter did not bother passing up BM homework for std 4 and std 5.. coz she actually
tested the system. She says.. WOW! mum... my teacher did not even notice I did not pass up BM HOMEWORK!!!
In Std 6... SIGNATURE is required from parent like every day. Like last week after the final exams.. FATHER & MOTHER need to sign
at the questions that were wrong. I ask my daughter what is the purpose of this exercise? She say, so that both parents knows the
standard of the pupil. Then she say.. Mum not to worry, my teacher already teach me the mistake!!!!..... We sign to acknowledge.. and parent no need take action??? WOW that is what i call la... SEKOLAH BERPRESTASI TINGGI....!!! This TEACHER got BERPRESTASI TINGGI approach to teaching...
To be honest, I am not sure IF I am happy to hear this or not as it sounds like PANIC-STUDYING and LAST-MINUTE CRAMMING by the school ...
Perhaps, it will be better if they build up the children's strength from Std 4 onwards instead of waiting until the last 9 months and then CRAM !!

I don't know how it is now but about 5-7 years ago when my kids were at Std.6 in LH, I do not see them having any stress. In fact I think the school gradually moved them up to the exam mentality state in a slow but planned process starting from Std.4 where they started with a day of extra tuition in school, increasing to something like 2 tuition days in Std.5 and going all out in Std.6 ... I don't like the push for exams but since the kids didn't feel the stress, I guess it was OK. Stress is only when you move from a full-freedom schedule to full-study schedule.
